UK government funds robot to help treat baldness

LONDON (Reuters) - The British government is providing 1.85 million pounds ($3.5 million) of funding to a Cambridge-based company that is building a robot to help treat baldness.

Biosciences firm Intercytex aims to perfect a treatment that involves taking hair follicles from the back of the neck, multiplying them and replanting them where they are needed.

The company said on Friday it had been awarded funding from the government's Technology Program, which it planned to use to develop a robotic system to speed up the painstaking process of multiplying the hair cells before they are replanted.

"The technology is challenging. No one has done this before," Intercytex Chief Executive Nick Higgins told Reuters earlier this week.

"We take cells responsible for hair growth, multiply them and then inject them in the head. We tease out the cells responsible for growing a new hair.

"The challenge is to make sure they grow thick enough and quick enough so they are cosmetically acceptable," he added.

The most common form of baldness is triggered by the male hormone dihydrotestosterone, which causes follicles to shrink and hair to thin before disappearing altogether.

Intercytex's research is now in intermediate Phase II testing after having safely been trialled on a handful of volunteers.

The hair is taken during a 30-minute operation under anaesthetic and replanted three weeks later after the cells have had time to grow.

Shares in the firm, which have receded around 30 percent since listing on London's junior AIM market in February, rose 0.6 percent to 88 pence by 0900 GMT.

IF the government is subsidizing a company like ICX, they must really have faith that HM is going to work. The robot could bring the costs way down as the culturing process is very labor intensive. ICX had initially though the costs for TRC was going to start at about 19K in our money, maybe this will make it more affordable for the masses. Phase 2 results should be known next year about this time when the test is over. This is good news.

Nathaniel,

Yes...........Id be very confident in having a product somewhere on earth in that time. Especially since Shishedo and Phoenixbio have also gotten into this. Phoenixbio has a cloning patent now in Japan, so they are definietly serious.

But it could very much be sooner than that also. If phase two tests go extremely well and we see pretty signifigant hair on these gents.................phase three might commence quite soon afterwards. It actually would be better if HM both created new hairs and resucitated old ones, as that would give a man a chance at original density (which would be wonderful). The science behind HM is "100% solid" and has worked in animal models.

However, reading about male pattern baldness treatments in animals would lead you to the correct conclusion that its easier to grow hair on a rodent than a human. Lots of things seem to work much better on mice than us. We are really hoping HM is going to put good hair on many men's heads. There is an HM forum at hairsite.com with some very enthusiastic and knowledeable posters. Everything I know about it pretty much comes from James Bond, John the Revelator, and The Almighty God of Hairloss. Those guys are really into this science. There is even one scientist over at hairsite, UWbio, who has experimented with HM on himself. I'd love to see baldness optional for all men who want real hair back on thier heads.

This is really awesome news, and I can tell that with the funding given- there is serious interest in this project and a huge certainty that this thing will work.

God. If this stuff actually works, i'm taking out a loan and getting it. At $20,000 I could pay that off over six years.

All I know is, if this stuff works well (or even enough to raise self confidence a high amount) us baldies will take over the world. I'm serious. Think about it. Think about the dreams and aspirations you had before you started losing your hair.

If we recover from whatever degree of depression (whether it's just completely minor or not) in another four years, our charge for life will be exteremly more higher then everyday ordinary people because we would have been through it.

Count me as hopeful.

Sweet news, I can't wait until 2009-2010! Might as well start to save up like I've been doing!

I can't wait. Knowing that HM could be out soon is such a relief, it's actually keeping me going.

A few months ago I was extremely depressed about hair loss. Now I'm on finasteride, and I'm not even sure if it's working yet, but I feel heaps better knowing that in a few years, I can go into a clinic, lie down for 30 minutes, and in a month or less, have new hairs growing on my head.

I also can't wait to see what my hairdresser will say. I'm thinking up excuses already. I wouldn't admit I got a hair transplant (even though it's HM). It's still just a bit embarassing.

Wow,HM is on fire with all thise news popping up.

It seems pretty serious and a very promissing procedure :D

I really really hope it will work and i wouldn´t mind paying 20 000€ if that gives me back my self esteem and happiness (considering i will be bald in 4/5 years and if i feel well bald or not),and i wont mind to stay on finasteride just to be on the safe side as they say :D

And what's sad is that I can't look away, I can't wait until, say, 6 to 9 months from now to check this website for daily updates... as if we are going to hear about ANY kind of Phase II progress before then. =[

But yeah, I said it before but I love repeating it: I think we are going to learn a lot from this phase of the clinical trials.

Now to get a life in the meantime!!! =)

Peace!

It's making me look forward to next year, specifically next Summer or Fall, when we should have some data on the Phase II trials progress.

Gives me hope, and more reason to save my money, bust my *** to get in shape, all that good stuff.

I can't remember looking forward to something so much before, at least not months in advance like this. Feels pretty good.

i totally agree, im 25 and if by 29 i could have a perfect head of hair or close i'd be so happy, but i'm afraid that with all this hope a lot of bald sufferers become quite self involved, i dont want that to happen to me.

I wonder if they'll be able to handle the rush of people that are going to want this procedure. Seems like there could be hundreds of thousands of people who want this done and can pay for it. I hope there's not a long waiting list.

I believe that they will meet the demand. I think hair transplant doctors will get in on it, and hopefully others who do not have doctorates will be able to perform the procedure.

"The treatment was initially tested on seven men with male pattern baldness, five of whom grew hair, and is now being tested on a further 20. "

I read that article posted earlier. I would not call 5 people out of 7 good numbers.
