Hi all,
'Nuther newbie. I'm currently in the throes of working out what I want to do. I'm leaning toward Propecia and have been researching accordingly.
I live in Japan and have been checking things out here. As you are probably aware, Propecia is available here in both 0.2 mg and 1.0 mg doses. It is marketed by Banyu. I found am interesting study published last year which was initially begun in 2001. Some 414 people were involved in the study: 139 were administered 1.0mg tablets, 137 used 0.2mg tablets, and 138 were given a placebo.
Of the 1.0mg group, 58% reported improvement over two years, 40% maintained their current state, and 2% worsened. Now here is the interesting point - the results were the same for the 0.2mg group!
On the face of this study, the drug was recognized by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and allowed into the Japanese market under a joint production deal with the large pharmaceutical manufacturer Banyu.
HENCE my dilemma.
I had planned to buy Proscar (not available here) and quarter it. I am now contemplating buying regular 1.0mg Propecia and doing the same. I think this seems reasonable because as noted in the "Effect of varying dosages on hair count" report (Document Resource Center), even minimal amounts yield reasonable results. According to the Japanese study, the results are remarkably similar, presumably leading to the low dose Propecia's emergence on to the market.
While this gives rise to various questions such as, "If they're similar, why market them both?", it doesn't really help me in my decision making process.
Anyway, I'm thinking of trying the minimalist approach. Less finasteride implies less chance of side effects (and less chance of improvement?)
Any ideas? Advice greatly appreciated.

I've been on 0.25mg finasteride for 16 months, no improvement or maintaining!!
i've heard a lot of guys on this forum having succes with 1mg and much less succes with 0.5mg.
according to theory i would recommend a low dose, according to practice i would definitly recommend a higher dose!
Altought serum DHT levels almost simularly decrease with 0.2 or 1.0mg, the increase in hair count significantly differs.

It would probably be possible to dissolve crushed proscar tabs (5mg) in some kind of liquid so that you could buy proscar yet still give yourself an accurate .2 mg dose a day without having to split your pills into 25 little pieces...perhaps someone else has some experience doing this?

As far as the other part of your question, I doubt that anyone knows for sure. If your hair loss is not bad at present perhaps you cuold try .2 mg a day for a year, and if your hair loss continues to progress you could switch to a higher dose.
