started out with a decent head of hair. was thinning in a diffuse manner with only slight bit of hairline and temple recession..i started finasteride last summer when i went through a bad shed... the first month i bought 5% minoxidil, 1 mg finasteride and nizoral. At 2 weeks into treatment i got my first shed which at the time due to my ignorance i attributed to the finasteride (was way too early for a finasteride shed). It must've been the minoxidil, i started losing hair from all over.. the nape of the neck, the sides including sideburns.

I quit the minoxidil after 3 weeks into it because i thought it was too much of a bother and i wanted to see how i fared with finasteride. The Loads and Loads that i shed due to the minoxidil never came back. I continued with the finasteride for a year. I quit the nizoral and shifted to polytar because the nizoral was too harsh on my scalp.

I have shed constantly for the last 13 months now. My shedding only increased after the minoxidil, after i quit it , i kept shedding from all over including regions where i hadnt shed from before starting treatment. throughout this year i have shed a minimum of 60-70 hair. I have forgotten what it was like to not lose hair. Its all over the place, my shirt, my pillow, the bathroom floor.

I have completed a year of finasteride and it'd be safe to say i've lost at least 30-40 % density ALL over my head. I can no longer style it the way i want to.. when wet it just sticks to my head like paper. there are no bald spots , i've just lost density to the point where it cannot be styled. Cutting it short and shaving is not an option..i look even more terrible with short hair.

I shall continue with the finasteride for another 2 months and then leave it as it was a complete waste of time. Diffuse thinning is a b**ch cause you just cant tell if its getting worse. Only way i could was by how long it'd take to style my hair throughout this year and how i could touch scalp immediately when poking through with a finger.

Sorry for the long post! I will not start minoxidil and i cant afford an increase in shedding at this point. I will look into some homemade spironolactone.. though dermovan isnt available here and i dont know where to get ethyl alcohol either.

man theres no way u shuda stopped minoxidil after 2 months i dont rekon. u gotta give that sh*t like 6-12 months. u needed to carry that on also, shedding is thought to be good as thicker hair is meant to to grow through after these hairs have fallen out. but stopping minoxidil may have messed that up, id get back on it, so ur back on the big 3.

yes you're right. i shouldnt have quit minoxidil. actually i shouldnt have started it since everybody was telling me i should just give the finasteride a shot first. but i didnt quit the minoxidil after 2 months..i quit it after the very first bottle which lasted only 3 wks. but it was enough to give me the shed, and i've shet like mad since then. none of the hair has come back.

i've lost too much density. I cannot style my hair the way i want.

i'm gonna give the spironolactone a shot with the finasteride for another 2 months. I dont know what to dissolve spironolactone in.. i dont know about any oil-in-water emulsion creams.. i'll try dissolving it in glycerin. Diffuse thinning like i said is a b**ch..it'll be too tough applying this all over.

IMO spironolactone is good for maintenance but you won't get anything back with it.

If finasteride hasn't worked for you I'd start on minoxidil aswell and this time give it a good 6 months or more to see if it does anything.

Also maybe you should consider switching to dutasteride since the finasteride has been so disappointing.

Lagalot, my experience with minoxidil is similar to yours. I shed like mad right after I started, but I kept using it. Within a couple of months the shedding stopped. Then I started getting too relaxed in my treatment and the shedding started again. I could never get it to stop, so I quit. I still shed and nothing has grown back. :(

minoxidil is evil! lol.. i dont want to depend on it at all.. plus i dont want peach fuzz..

i guess i'll try keeping the little i have now... i'm gonna mix some aldactone tabs into ethanol and refrigerate it.

minoxidil is too expensive when you're thinning diffusely..i cant apply it all over all the time.

What about just switching to dutasteride? You haven't got much left to lose now have you?

Also what about adding Tricomin?

well..the tricomin and other products would've been a good shot..but i'm located in asia, and the whole ordering on the web thing is a bit tough here..strict customs and blah de blah..

As for dutasteride..i'm scared to death of it.. i had terrible sides on 1 mg finasteride.. 3-4 days into my libido went down.. if it was 8/10 before..i'd rate it a 5/10 now.. then the horrible weight gain..before treatment, no matter what i ate, i wouldnt gain weight.. now i'm 20 pounds over my 'ideal' weight.. i'm taking care of it with the gym and cardio 4 times a week..

then the fatiguq and other hypothyroid symptoms.. cant wake up in the morning.. way too much trouble waking up.. and the brain fog pissed the hell out of me especially during exam time.

as for not having anything to lose.. i'm not 'bald' as yet..no bald spot even.. just really thin. thin to the point i can touch scalp right away so its thinner than its ever been.. i just cant 'style' it the way i want anymore.. and i dont look good with other hairstyles... short hair isnt an option either..

i wonder why people havent had that good results with spironolactone..i would've thought it to be even more affective than finasteride..

That has honestly always been my feeling about it too. I'm too scared to ever start minoxidil and I don't plan to. My opinion about minoxidil is someday "they" will find that it completely messes up the natural hair growth phases and cycling... hence permanent shedding. If I ever start a growth stimulator it will be proanthocyanidins or something "natural."
