I've been lurking here for a while and thought it was time to post my personal experience so far. I've had diffuse hair loss for about 8-9 years now. I still have most of my hair. It started in the front and over the last couple of years I've deleoped a diffuse bald spot in the back. I decided to try Rogaine 5% after noticing that my hair loss was all of a sudden starting to get worse. Every time I took a shower there was a big clump of hair in the drain. More than usual. I took the rogaine for a month before starting Propecia and Nizoral. My hairloss continued for about a month then one day it almost completely stopped(about a week after starting propecia). This continued for about a week...there was almost no hair in the drain after a shower. Then as quickly as it stopped it started again. Depressing but I kept with it. I just started month #3 on Propecial and over the last two weeks my hair loss has slowed up again. I just got out of the shower and there was barely any hair in the drain. I hoping things are starting to take effect. What's really neat is there seems to be a few tiny hairs starting to come in on my "hairline". These hairs aren't really noticeable yet. They're very thin and barely have any color to them.
Side effects:
the only side effects I've encountered is watery ejaculate and my sex drive has actually increased. Can't get enough. I've read about a few people experiencing this increase in sex drive and have to say I'm glad I'm one of them. I've also noticed the slightest bit of dandruff but it's not bad at all I'm guessing that's thanks to the Nizoral.

List of hair products I've tried:
well lets start with shampoos. I've found a shampoo that really makes my hair feel thicker it's called Diametress by Nexus....I also use Neutrogena Anti-Residue Formula once a week(really cleans your head). My favorite conditioner is Nioxin Scalp Therapy. Their Shampoo is really good too. I know that they have no effect on hair growth but they really make my hair feel clean and the conditioner washes out easily. I also use Nizoral shampoo about twice a week sometimes more. I've tried the Infusium 23 shampoo and conditioner that a few people here like but honestly I don't like um. The shampoo is like a cream and is kind of hard to wash out same goes for the conditioner.
TO ALL TOPPIK USERS OR POTENTIAL USERS.
Yes I actually bought into this stuff and i actually thought it helped a little bit until I decided to take a couple mirrors in a room where the sun shines in to see what it looked like under natural light. OMG it's very noticeable so I stopped. Thank god I only used it for a couple of days. It looked like MDF saw dust in my hair. If it sounds to good to be true it usually is.
So there ya go that's all my honest info up to date. Oh forgot one thing I also take L-lysine not sure if it helps but I've never read a post to where it may actually make things worse like Saw Palmetto. I've taken my before pictures and I'll probably take some more at the six month mark. I'm not getting my hopes up however. My real goal is one year. Please feel free to ask me any questions.

BHD,

You may want to add a higher potency minoxidil, @ hairlosspharmacy.com (12.5%)and adding emu oil after you apply the minoxidil. It has great anti- inflam. properties, and may even offer some antiandrogenic effect as well, based on Dr Hollick's studies.

Another option is to add topical spironolactone (2 or 5%) @ minoxidil.com

Thanks for the info ColtsFan...but I think I'm going to stick with my current regimen for a while and ride it out. Since I may be seeing a couple of little hairs poking up I don't think there's any need to increase dosages at this time...maybe in the future. I'm not suffereing from any inflamation what so ever from the 5% minoxidil so I guess I'm pretty lucky in that respect. However I'll do a search for that study by Dr. Hollick to see what that's all about. Thanks for the info. I'll hold onto your recommendations for the future.

jah-mahican,

I can understand that you wouldn't want to take a drug for hairloss. But as far as you don't want to because you don't want to upset what you still have makes no sense. Propecia does not make you lose more hair. It helps the hair loss stop and hopefully start to regrow. Since my first post on this thread my hair loss has been getting less and less.
Sure you may go through a shed but those are hairs you're gonna lose anyways. Pease read the Shedding article in the upper left hand corner if you haven't already. Good info.
Also as far as your scalp itching...That's what the Nizoral will help with along with possible dandruff. I believe it's also supposed to increase the diameter of the hair follicle giving a thicker look. That's why I recommeded the big 3 for ya.
Coltsfan has also given you an option for the itchy inflamed scalp from the Rogaine....Emu oil.
Bottom line is you can try to do something about it or not. Just make sure your comfortable with your decision. I remeberf about a year ago I was fine with the idea of losing my hair...I accepted it. Then it really started to fall out again noticably and I did a 180 and said F this. I;m at least gonna try. If I try and it doesn't work I can live with that. If I go bald without trying to do something I know I'll always wonder What if.
Just my opinion...Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
