Hey everyone, I found this forum this afternoon and have been reading through it. Today was a holiday in Canada so I've had a chance to do lots of reading. It's very reassuring to see that there are quite a few members in my age group going through this battle. I'm not going into the battle against male pattern baldness alone! I've written a bit about myself below and my hair-loss.

Towards the end of college I began to notice (or should I say my family began to notice) I was beginning to lose hair on the top/front of my head. I never really gave it much thought until a few weeks ago when I really began to notice other people my age had fuller heads of hair and not as much if any scalp showing. For the last 10 years or so I have always gelled my hair up at the front and I still maintain this style today. About a year ago I began going to a new hair place that used a paste-type product instead of regular gel. The paste was less solid than gel which means I did not have as much clumping of hair meaning less scalp showed. Last week I took my first step of going to see a clinic in Toronto that caters to hair loss sufferers. This firm offers surgical, non-surgical, and hair-system solutions. At this point I am only interested in the non-surgical path however I'm starting to accept the fact (and my dad is reiterating it regularly LOL) that I will someday need a transplant. At the beginning of my consult the first thing I was informed was that I have really lost a lot of hair. Some high resolution photos of my scalp showed I had a lot of dormant follicles covered with sebum as well as some miniaturization in the areas on the front, top, and crown of my scalp. The consultant said that I have a good chance of regrowth if I was to begin a topical, vitamin, and low-level laser treatment. His company offers a starter kit (shown here) which includes the HairMax 9 or 12 beam comb, a kit that includes a shampoo, conditioner, scalp fortifying cleanser, a scalp treatment, vitamins, and 3.5% minoxidil (the maximum amount available over the counter in Canada). The price for this package is very reasonable and the individual products can be bought separately from the office once the first set is finished. Certain things like the conditioner and vitamins may not be critical to me but since they are included they can’t hurt to try. As the Minoxidil is only available as a lower dose (3%) in Canada, I may purchase it online or buy it in a pharmacy across the border if need be (Costco, Walgreens, etc).

Family hair-loss history
My father has absolutely no hair on the top of his head and is a textbook example of the horseshoe pattern. By my age he had significantly more hair loss and photos of him in his late twenties show him nearly bald on the top. His father had the same hair loss pattern based on my brief recollections (I was about 5 when he died) and photos I saw. His mother had less hair loss but still was quite thin. On my mother’s side, her father had hair however it was thin while her mother (my maternal grandmother) had good and thick hair during her later years based on my recollection. My mom’s hair is thinning on the top/front however her hairstyle covers it well enough.

Yeah, your hair loss pattern is not so bad (even though you're losing hair a lot, clearly), so with average luck (ie. how you respond to the treatments), you'll get some regrowth. You didn't say anything about finasteride though, any plans for that? You can get regrowth with minoxidil for sure, but it's not going to block DHT. Anyway, good luck with your process. If you are going to be updating this with any monthly updates - I'll stay tuned!

Yesterday I had another consultation with a hair loss specialist. They recommended a similar type of treatment including a vitamin supplement with DHT blockers, minoxidil, a shampoo, and the HairMax laser comb. This person mentioned Finesteride (whereas the other place does not suggest meds). They also specifically mentioned Nizoral is not worth trying as it's not effective based on their experiences. I was very reassured to hear that although I am losing/thinning on the top/crown there is very little recession in the front hairline and temples.

What sort of natural vitamins/herbs have you have personal experience with for hair loss?

Why did my post not show up?! It was rather lengthy. How long until this "moderator approval" thing is not necessary?

Sounds like the hair restoration company you visited are a bit dodgy. Forget the lasercomb, or laser therapy, that stuff is a load of bollocks, it doesn't work and those laser combs are expensive. If you actually want to keep your hair then you need to start taking 1 mg Finasteride (or maybe dutasteride) as soon as possible, and if you want to regrow your hair then you should try minoxidil/rogaine.

^ Second that. At the very least get on finasteride ASAP and forget about those quacks. Good luck.

Yesterday I purchased my first topical products and began my regimen. I did not go for the LaserComb as I read very little about it's effectiveness and basically feel it is not going to do much if anything. I will be going to the US on the weekend to purchase the 5% minoxidil. So far my regimen consists of a shampoo, scalp treatment, and scalp/hair fortifier plus vitamins (containing DHT blocking ingredients). I'm optimistic the topical stuff with at least keep the scalp in good shape for regrowth with minoxidil plus the vitamins are something to lower the DHT levels. I'm not going on any prescription medication at this point. I'll keep this updated. One positive I have noticed (as I did when I tried minoxidil foam a few years ago) is that the scalp/hair fortifier spray kind of gives the hair somewhat more volume. FWIW...

I know you said you aren't going on any real meds right now, and sorry for being very brief and blunt but I'm writing this on a pretty old phone and it's a bit of a chore. If you aren't on any real dht blocking meds, as far as any research into male pattern baldness so far has shown, you ain't gunna keep your hair. Get a supply of fincar from inhouse, eat a quarter a day and take some pics at day 0, then month 4, then month 6. i think you'll be pleasantly surprised. if you get nasty sides then stop... but i started when i was still a teen and beyond maybe two weeks of ball ache and brain fog i had no sides, and i'm 3 or 4 years in now.
any place that would recommend vitamins and that f*cking comb over finasteride is hugely, hugely irresponsible.

good luck, bro.

I am not willing to go for finasteride or any other prescription med. My goal is to try the natural method of DHT blocking combined with minoxidil. The topical products/shampoo is not going to do much but at least it'll keep the scalp healthy. No comb for sure despite me being quite interested in it before I read 99/100 posts about it being completely useless.

Then I'm afraid you'll lose your hair. That's a fact. minoxidil won't do you any good on its in the long term. But hey, if you're not too worried about losing your hair then what's the worry :) At least save the money you're using on all that other stuff. I hear women are into rich, bald men.

I'd like to give this a try and then see if I may be willing to go onto finasteride. Right now the side effects scare me. Whether I go on finasteride or not, a hair transplant is going to be the final solution at some point. No amount of finasteride, minoxidil, or anything will allow you to keep your hair for life unless you stay on it indefinitely.

Dreamliner, you sound exactly like I did, and do.
I'm 22 and share many of your thoughts and concerns. My hair loss is even sort of similar to yours, with more advanced recession at the temples.

I'm not a guy who uses a lot of medication. I don't drink energy drinks, I don't drink coffee, I don't even drink alcohol... I'm very, very restrictive with what I put into my body.

My dad is a great model for what my hair will become. My recession is in the same pattern as his hair loss. Of course, both his brothers have great hair, even his dad (my grandfather) has better hair... soon better than me, and he's in his 70s. Some people tell me "don't blame your dad, it could be your mom's side". I'm telling you people, my male pattern baldness is in the same, exact, design as my dad. It's his genes.

With that being said, I wanted to do something about my hair. At first I was going to ride it out. "Hey, short hair isn't bad. People go bald all the time." But every week that passed, I felt worse and worse about my hair. If I was 30, I might not care. But I started balding at around 19, getting more noticeable every year. I didn't want to be bald by 25, and that was the track I was on.

I didn't want to get on finasteride, but I caved. I understand the plenty of concerns there are out there, the more you search, the worse your likelihood to use finasteride is. But I went through it all. I wanted to make an educated decision.

I've only been on it for about 2 months, so no improvements yet. I've been on minoxidil for a month. I don't know if I have any unusual shedding. I was losing hair anyways, but nothing alarming.

If it's side effects you're worried about, and I understand there are concerns about taking things said on the internet by a guy named anonymous as truth, but I am telling you if you want to keep your hair, give finasteride a shot.

If you do, I recommend starting small. I started out cutting the 1mg pill into quarters, and taking it every OTHER day. No side effects. Every two weeks I ramped up the dosage. After 2 weeks, it was .25 mg every day. Two more weeks, .500 mg every day.

I've ordered for 27 bucks 30 pills of 5mg Proscar online. I will split each pill into eighths. That is a little more than .500 mg per. But that's also 120 days of finasteride, for 27 dollars. Can't beat that.

Good luck man, we're all in the same boat. Maybe minoxidil and the natural stuff will help for you. The experience is different for everyone.
