27yrs old, unsympathetic doctor refusing to prescribe finasteride because he himself is bald.

Hello, I have been lurking the forums for a good 3 months. I feel like I already know half of the regulars here.

I recently started RU but dropped it out of fear after someone on Good Looking Loser claimed just 3 days of application caused heart failure. I turned to my doctor to try finasteride. The loss of libido doesn't bother me ATM (not currently in a relationship nor seeking one, I have a lot of family crap I need to sort out first). My doctor, who is a Norwood 7, seemed insulted when I asked about treatment for hairloss. He simply said "I never prescribe treatments for hair-loss, there is no stopping it. Welcome to the club!". I am so f*cking pissed right now. I guess I am here for support and to support others as best I can.

In my view, we are all balding bros (and a few sisters here and there), we should be supportive of each others' choices, no matter what.

I find it sad that people who have balded and embraced it seem to especially look down on those of us who wish to keep our hair. Why is this? Has anyone else had similar experiences? My best friend is a Norwood -1 but completely supportive. The people most hostile towards my efforts to fight hairloss (s5 cream, rogaine and Keto so far) are actually other bald people (they saw the products when using my restroom). Why is this? Can someone shed some light?

Thanks in advance, I'm glad I found this community.

I am a norwood 2.5 heading for 3V at warp speed. Rogaine has lost its magic for me

Honestly that enraged me just reading that. Don't go back to that ****.
With current products on the market you can keep your hair for ever honestly :Z

All it takes is dedication.

Yeah, find a better doctor, ideally a specialist. GPs don't give a crap about hairloss, are grossly uninformed on the subject and will not help you. Many of us have been in the same situation, GPs are the last place I'd go for finasteride.

I started losing my hair at 22 and went to my doctor when I was about 25 to see what I could do to stop it/slow it down. He proceeded to tell me how natural it was to lose hair and there was nothing I could do. He even said "I've even lost hair, it happens to all of us". This a$$hole was in his 50's, I was 25! I lost years and a bunch of hair because of doctors that didn't know a damn thing. I didn't bother to research myself. I figured if there was something that worked my Dr would know about it. I was wrong. Finally at 36 I went to my doctor and told him I would like to try finasteride. He also said there was nothing I could do, but wrote me a script anyway. They were all wrong! I not only stopped my hair loss, but grew some back. No I don't have all my hair back(not even close), but finasteride did help improve my hair. Shame I didn't know about it sooner.

Hey guys, thanks for your support, and I do see where you are coming from coolmusti (I am aware of the possibility of severe sides). As wit Notcoolanymore, my doctor is in his 50s AND... he grew up in India (I am not sure, but I would guess it is less stigmatized there). What is strange is, although I am aware of finasteride's potential sides, he tried to give me ANOTHER medication (wellbutrin) because I was "way too upset about my hairloss". I didn't go to him for that, and he has been a good doctor in most regards, but when it comes to hairloss, his attitude is "**** it man, it happened to me, join the club. There isno stopping it".

In the case of GPs, they tend to have good knowledge on a wide array of medical subjects, but our knowledge on any one topic (hair loss in our case) can greatly exceed theirs because it is something that is very important to us. It's good to know others have experienced this same frustration. I'm not sure what I plan to do, but my hair is staying. I have the option to have a good FUE done if I choose to down the road (I've saved up enough for perhaps two, knowing there are usually maintenance procedures needed).

Thanks everyone, and good luck in your fight for you hair as well!

My GP was also unwilling to write me a script for finasteride. She made me go to a derm. My derm was a bald dude, he prescribed me finasteride right off the bat. I wanted to ask him why he didn't take finasteride himself, but I am a shy guy
