38 Yrs Old With Odd Hairline and Unusual Loss Pattern

Hi! Brand new to the forum and I appreciate the opportunity to share my concerns. I am 38 and I never thought I would have any issues with hair loss since i've always had a great head of hair and both my father (currently late 50's) and my maternal grandfather (passed away in his early 70s) have/had full heads of dark hair their entire lives. My issue started only 4 or 5 yrs ago, and basically i just have one spot, right in the middle of my hairline, where i have lost hair and it is noticeable, at least to me. It's sort of a 'reverse widow's peak', as i've taken to describing it and it just looks odd IMO. Everything else looks fine, both on the crown and temples, other than the usual maturing. What's concerning me is the fact that i, of course, have been noticing others' hairlines recently, and i have not seen one other person with a hairline like mine-- which leads me to believe that maybe there's something else (perhaps more serious?) at work causing my hair to fall out in that one spot. Also, it just looks weird and i'd like to improve the appearance.

I am currently not on any medication since i've heard some recent reports about adverse effects. If anything, i'd be willing to consider a possible transplant (FUE?) to make a subtle improvement before i'd take any medication.

Please take a quick glance at my pics and let me know if there is a name or 'type' for this sort of hair loss, or if i am overreacting. Thanks.

medication should be taken before an FUE, not the other way around.

+1

you could maintain that or improve it on finasteride.

thanks so much for the replies.. i am brand new to all of this, so any info is helpful to me.

i guess i just have some trepidation in re. to taking medication due to some reports i've seen like the following, just last month:

Propecia labels will now include warnings for libido disorders, ejaculation disorders, and orgasm disorders that continued for men even months after stopping the drug, the FDA says. Proscar's label will include a "decreased libido" warning that continues after drug discontinuation. Both drugs' labels will also include a new description of reported cases of male infertility and poor semen quality that improved after patients stopped taking the drug.

i just joined the board today, so i'm going to guess that this has been discussed ad naseum here-- but i am just averse to taking risks with medication (rare as the side effects may be) for something that isn't a medical emergency.. But that's just me.

do you think that a transplant specialist would refuse to do a very minor, subtle hair transplant (FUE or otherwise) on me without first subjecting myself to medication?

it sure is.. do you have any pics posted here? i've been looking and looking, and have never seen anyone with this type of hairloss.. if anyone here could direct me to pics of anyone with a similar hairline to mine, that would be awesome-- at least i wouldn't feel like such a freak, ha.

thanks 2025, you do have a little of that 'indentation' that i have, though not as prominent as mine i don't think.

MBS, I have a true widows peak, the little section of hair in the middle, and mine too has thinned out alot over the past 6 years. It is a variation of female pattern balding. You are balding down the center. I find this common with men around your age and older who still have a full head of hair and start thinning around late 30's to early 40's. I don't have it as bad as you do and I am older than you but I am going to have most of my grafts concentrated there and behind there. I can live with it now as I have enough hair to comb forward to hide it but it bothers me. I probably need about small amount of grafts in that area and I would be fine. I would say overall my hair loss pattern is odd but the good news ,like you ,I can hide it pretty well with bangs. Just curious, when you sleep at night do you tend to burrow your face in the pillow. I must do that because when I wake up my hair is sticking up near my hairline.I have suspected this might cause some type of tractional alopecia and that area tends to be sore alot too. Get your thyroid check just in case as I do have thyroid issues. On the bright side, you just started thinning now so you won't have major hair loss hopefully. I don't know if Propecia will help there but minoxidil may do better but nothing great as I have tried to thicken my hairline is its impossible. Maybe it might work better for you. Basically you have a NW2A pattern and most people with that don't go much higher on the scale and it makes you a good hair transplant candidate too.

Yea, keep in mind you're like 12 years older than me though so I'd still say you're in a better position than me haha.

Minoxidil works for my temples but its fcking useless in my front for some reason...but you should give it a try. If it doesnt work all you have to do is get a hair transplant and you're set for life considering your age :)

thanks for the great info guys.

DoctorHouse, your post made me feel a little better that there is some sort of precedent for what i'm experiencing.. As to your question in re. to how i sleep, i'm honestly not sure and i've never noticed my hairline in the morning as opposed to other times of day-- i'll try to pay attention.. Also, do you happen to have any of your photos that are accesible on this site, or links to any other pics that resemble my type of hair loss? Thanks.

My loss is very minor compared to yours so I don't think I would make you feel any better. My hair looks better than most guys on here so I don't want to post any photo that would set off some flame throwers. I can't remember off hand some people on here who have the similar loss to you but just use the search and put in the words "thinning or balding down the middle or female pattern balding" and you should find photos similar to yours.
