In early human testing of finasteride, subjects took 50 mg/day of the drug for several months, with no ill effects. Human volunteers have also taken as much as 400 mg in single doses, again with no ill effects. In the stumptailed macaque studies, the animals were given 1 mg/kg/day for the entire duration of the study which I believe lasted well over a year. Converted to my own weight, that would be the same as if I routinely took 100 mg of finasteride every single day for a long period of time.
I've never made any secret of the fact that I think most people pay FAR too much attention to how much finasteride they take. That drug is safe and effective over a HUGE range of doses, in my opinion. When I see some newbie ask a question very seriously like "Is it SAFE to take quartered Proscar? Is that extra 0.25 mg of finasteride SAFE to take??", I lean back in my chair and laugh out loud!
While I wouldn't have any particular desire to spend a lot more money than is really necessary by taking much larger doses of finasteride, if there were some really good reason to do so, I wouldn't hesitate to take up to a maximum of around 20-30 mg/day, as I mentioned in my previous post. For example, taking enough extra finasteride to produce an inhibition of the type 2 enzyme which is closer to what you get with dutasteride would be a really interesting experiment. Taking a Proscar tablet four times a day (spread evenly throughout the day) would get you closer to that level. It's about as much as I'd personally be willing to take on a long-term basis.
