Hello everyone,
I’m a 19 year-old female who started hair loss treatment in August 2020 after 2 years struggling with it.
My doctor diagnosed me (without blood tests or biopsy) with Androgenetic Alopecia (non scarring he told me) and Telogen Effluvium (possibly chronic) + Tricodomia and prescribed me 5mg of Finasteride daily, 2 hair supplement pills daily, 60mg of corticosteroids weekly (to stop intense scalp pain/burning sensation) and an Anagen stimulator serum to apply at night.
I’ve been extremely consistent with Finasteride and hair supplements. I had to ditch corticosteroids due to very bad side effects (not being able to walk for loss of balance, extreme fatigue, extreme skin thinning (I had to wear gloves to avoid cuts and would wound myself just by getting dressed), worsening of acne - I already have seborrhoea dermatitis on my face and scalp so this only made it worse) 4 months in because they did not subside and only got worse. The Anagen serum I had trouble being consistent but I tried to compensate it using it the entire 6 months instead of the suggested 3 months.
The first 4 months on this treatment I experienced ridiculous amount of shedding that only slowed down a couple weeks ago (and still lose around 50 hairs daily which is not satisfactory for me).
My hair is 3 times worse than when I started (before the hair loss was diffuse but a bit more noticeable on the sides of my hair and now it has become very acute on top with a lot of thinning) and I don’t see satisfactory regrowth to at least fill my hair up to the point it was before treatment. Finasteride seemed the most promising out of all the treatment pills I took and the safest systemic drug for me. My doctor told me we could very likely recover 90% of my hair and I’ve lost around 65% of it now (when I went in I thought I had lost around 40% and I didn’t experience as much thinning).
Is this normal? What should I do? Should I be suspicious of the original diagnosis? What are your recommendations?
