I've been on finasteride since January of 2003. My hair has not thinned or receeded since then. I have hair grafts to mark the spot, and there is no gap developing between my grafts and my native hair. No color changes either.
I'm also using Nizoral 1% shampoo every other day.
I don't use minoxidil because my native hair is thick enough, and my grafted hair was smooth bald, and I don't expect Minoxidil to do much to smooth bald areas.
Back when I dumped 8mL per day on my smooth bald areas, I got some long peach fuzz in areas, but I don't think it was worth using that much. Minoxidil is annoying to apply, and the foam smells too strong.
My approach is just to do stuff I can stick to year after year. A pill a day and some shampoos does that for me. The other shampoo I use is one with piroctone olamine in it. I add lavender essential oil to it, and rotate it with the nizoral.
I'm thinking of getting some Nizoral 2% shampoo, and using it like a 10 minute cream right in front of and above my ears, before shampooing it out.
I know the shampoo works becuase it makes my ear hairs really long. I keep having to shave them daily.
