8 Months Propecia/Nizoral

Hey guys,

I'm 23 and first noticed some thinning on the crown when I was 19 or 20. Last August I decided to start on propecia after I began getting comments about my hair loss. Sorry I don't have any pics, but I can tell you that when I started my regimen I had only slight hair loss on one of my temples, but the crown had thinned to the point where the density seemed to be about half as thick as it once was and you could see through pretty much the whole crown. At the time I seemed to be losing around 30 hairs in the shower.

I started on 1mg of propecia daily while shampooing with Nizoral 3 times a week since the beginning of August. After about 5 months I had a dramatic decrease in the amount of hair I was losing in the shower - only one or two hairs on my hands after shampooing. Shedding 5 hairs has become quite rare while some days it appears that I'm not shedding any hair at all!

During the first five months on finasteride/nizoral I did not notice an increase in shedding, but my slight hair loss on that one temple thinned out quite a bit as did my other temple and I developed a mature hairline in the front. My sides appeared a little bit thinner as well. I didn't notice any changes in the crown other than it looking equally shitty.

Now after 8 months and a brand new hair cut I've noticed that the crown has indeed begun to thicken up. Nothing drastic, but there is a difference and I'm not imagining it. Even without styling my hair, it looks a lot fuller as does the rest of my hair including the sides. The front seems to have stabilized at a mature hairline.

I know it's early, but it appears that I'm already having some major success! I will keep on updating in the future, hopefully with some pics.

Now for the question that I know a lot of people are interested in...
... any side effects?

Yes. After a month on propecia I developed a nasty canker sore inside my lip that despite medication did not heal for well over a month. I've read that canker sores can be indicative of hormonal changes, so I'm fairly certain that the propecia was the culprit. Luckily the damn thing finally went anyway.

During the first few months I did have some sexual sides; watery semen, decrease in ejaculate, and the occasional period of super low libido. I rode it out and luckily the sides all went away right around the time I stopped shedding.

The nizoral dried my hair out a bit, but I beat that by shampooing with Nioxin before applying the nizoral and using the Nioxin conditioner afterward. I use Nioxin shampoo and conditioner on my nizoral off days as well and it works really well as a thickening shampoo aside from preventing the dryness.

And for those who are interested, the only male in my family who had hair loss before he was in his 50's was my maternal grandfather who lost most of his hair by the time he was in his mid 30's. And yes, the temple that had the slight hair loss was on the side that I used to part my hair on since I was just a kid.

Thanks for reading. I hope this provides some encouragement for those on propecia or for those thinking about it. I will continue to provide updates.

I just wanted to add that before I started using Nizoral, I had really bad inflammation in the crown. Not only was it bright red all the time, but it itched like crazy. Only a month or so on Nizoral and that went away.

Thanks!

I was quite nervous about getting on Propecia at first, but now it looks like I definitely made the right choice.

Glad to hear your success! Quick question though, what type of nizoral shampoo do you use exactly, and does it require a prescription?

Thanks!

2% nizoral, which I get without prescription here, but it maybe different depending on your location.

I live in the US so I believe 1% is the only one available over the counter. You also mentioned you use the nioxin, do you use the 3 step system e.g. cleaner, scalp therapy, scalp treatment?

Do you feel that it actually helps to thicken existing hair? Because I consistently here conflicting reports regarding nioxin.

Thanks!

I just use the shampoo and conditioner. I started using them for about a year before I started propecia and I would say that any thickening is merely cosmetic. It never slowed down my shedding, but I still really like it as a shampoo. Gives me lots of volume and my hair has a nice shine and feels really nice when using it... :gay: It also allows me to use nizoral every three days without drying it out at all. On my nizoral days I always shampoo with Nioxin - lather for a minute, rinse, apply the nizoral (lathers WAY WAY better if you shampoo beforehand), leave in for five minutes, rinse and then I use the conditioner which I leave in only for a minute or two.

To update; It's been over a year now and I've had amazing results. I only lose a couple hairs in the shower and my crown has come pretty close to being totally regrown. Looks kinda thin when it's wet, but once I style I don't think you can tell that I have male pattern baldness unless you're an experienced watcher. Hairline has maintained at a Nw2 widows peak and if i grow it out and part it, it looks no different from a NW1, although I do actually prefer to keep it shorter as I like the Nw2 look better. Thickness and density has increased all over the head as well and I've now got a ton of small hairs on my temple points (above the sideburns) that look they're going to come in as well.

No sides whatsoever. Overall my hair hasn't looked this good since high school.
