A new Japanese hair growth stimulant in the works

Hi!

I am sorry if this is old news to some but I do not recall reading about it here before. A Japanese firm, Cosmo Oil (which operates in the oil refinery industry) has done some test together with a scientist Dr. Yoshiyasu Ito on a hair growth stimulant containing 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and iron. It seem to work better than minoxidil in mice - great another product for balding mice :) - but what may be encouraging is also the initial trials on humans. On the other hand it could also just be another hyped about Japanese product. Judge for yourself where you can find one pic on: http://www.cosmo-oil.co.jp/eng/press/050530/index.html

Maybe some one could contact the press officer of Cosmo or Dr Ito and get further info on its developments plans - So far I have only found a contact form in Japanese on the site - or maybe we can access this source elsewhere?

Sounds like the old psychic Egdar Cayce's cure for baldness......Pennsylvania crude oil for half and hour three times a week, wash out with alchohol, take vitamins, and something about eating potato skins with a back and forth scalp massage. Oil Companies and hair, they better stop chargin' 2 bucks a gallon!!!!!!!LOL

This is a really interesting development. It seems to be a random discovery on the part of this Dr. Ito using this amino acid produced by Cosmo Oil. It just really seems to be the off-chance discovery of a beneficial side-effect of one their petrochemicals.

This Cosmo Oil group has over $365,000,000 in capital assets. They're no fly-by-night. Their main business is oil exploration, refining and petrochemicals. They sell this amino acid ALA as a fertilizer. It really looks like a complete random find.

Remember, this is the way that many medical treatments are discovered. Despite all the money poured into R&D to target the development of the illness specific drugs, many are discovered in a random and serendipitous way.

Thanks for posting this Eurodane.

I am doing a PhD on biorefineries (chemicals from biomass). This DALA can be produced from levulinic acid (LA) which is the product of the conversion of cellulose and other 6 carbon carbohydrates via the Biofine process (do a google). This can convert any biological stuff (eg sewage, waste paper etc) to LA. The conversion of LA to DALA used to be very expensive and the stuff still costs around $100/kg at the moment but researchers in the states beleive they can get this down by around 2 orders of magnitude by new chemical pathways. Due to its very high price DALA is currently only used as an agent in cancer therapy but I have seen research detailing its great promise as a herbicide and plant growth promoter, I believe it can also be useful for acne too, I never heard anything about hair loss although I was previously aware of this cosmo-oil company. I guess it's possible, thouh, this is a pretty amazing molecule....

Oh please!! This study is BS.

It generally takes any hair growth agent 3 months to stimulate some visable, vellus hair. You don't just start growing dark, terminal hair in seven weeks, like these people claim.

If you're dumb enough to believe this, then just massage in some motor oil into your scalp and your bald spot will appear smaller too.

It is stange that their very best example of success (I presume they would put their very best up on the website) should be kept to 2 shots unevenly lit with unmathced angles at such low resolution, I was suprised to see that you could not click on these images to enlarge them.

I have, very quickly lined them up as best as I could as the first image would seem to be distorted, I don't think they are retouched, I just don't think they show anything, I have also quickly matched contrast.

In the second 'after' image the hair is brushed back in the first 'before' image the hair is brushed more 'away' from the center to reveal slightly more scalp at the sides (perhaps deliberately) but in all reality this makes little difference as it is hard to tell 'before' from 'after' anyhow!

Suspect.

Right. Alot of snake oilers have bad pictures in which they show pictures of hair brushed different ways where the first picture they show the bald spots but the next one would be a totally different hair style. Some sites it is horribly obvious.

My first post ! :D

The pics show exactly whats happening to me - the centre of my head seems to be getting thinner hair while the rest of my head is still growing strong ...... is there a name for this kind of haor loss ??

I'm 30 and have absolutely no history of hair loss in my family - My grandfather is almost 90 and still has a full head of hair !!
