Hi,
I am using Minoxidil 5% for more than 2 years now, I had always a red, rashy forehead full of little pimple but somehow I could managed to live with it by using different minoxidil brands and not care so much about it but recently the situation has gotten really worse in a way that everyone meets me the first thing they say is "why is your forehead so red and rashy? what is that? are you Okay?" and also as soon as I wash my head with shampoo they get a little painfull if I touch them by my hands but they are not Itchy at all! I know that its an allergy for sure but I cant figure out the item precisely I have allergy to because it gets better and worse by just changing the minoxidil brand and the shampoo but it never goes away!

Please help!
Here are some pictures of my head:

I wonder if you might look better just not using minoxidil, and maybe buzzing or shaving your head? I say that because your allergy seems pretty strong, you cant seem to get rid of it, and you look like someone from what I can tell in the photos who might look cool with a buzzed head. At least, if youre using minoxidil in the front and forehead, maybe you could stop that and just use it in the areas where there's significant hair, like the sides and back. ?

Have tried experimenting using PG/PPG free minoxidil, or low alcohol or both PG & alcohol free versions ?

thank you so much but I personally think that no one looks good without hair! at least there are a few people who can look good with a bald head! but yeah...I think I'm gonna have to shave my head completely but my skin is so white that I have to take a bronze cream or something to not look like a corpse after because I might frighten everyone!
and I have always used minoxidil on the back of my head not so much on the front because thats what was said in the brochure.
thank you

Just to give you a bit of a kick start, I have used various regular 5% liquid minoxidil treatments in the past ans with all of them I ended up having lots of itching/irritation/redness. I tried searching for the cause of this and as many people will testify from their experience, it is usually the propylene glycol (pg) causing most of this. The most common minoxidil pg free treatment is minoxidil foam, it doesn't contain pg. Some people may be sensetive to the alcohol so they may need to use a low alcohol minoxidil formula. On the very rare occasiona I saw people using both alcohol and pg free minoxidil, though I haven't seen any reputable companies except less known random ones on ebay.

Here are a few options from what I know:

PG free/low pg minoxidil:
- Kirkland minoxidil foam, Rogaine foam, both companies are extrmely well known
- Lipogaine 'sensetive scalp' liquis minoxidil, company is quite known
- MinoxidilMax has both no pg and low pg liquid minoxidil versions, company is quite known around the forums
- Xandrox no pg liquid minoxidil, company kinda known
- Minoxidil Laboratory has pg free liquid minoxidil, company is kinda known

Low alcohol minoxidil:
- Foligain low alcohol liquid minoxidil, company sort of known
- Qgain low alcohol, company not popular, but seems legit

Pg and alcohol free minoxidil:
I haven't found any semi reputable company selling this except for randome one if you search for alcohol and pg free minoxidil on ebay.

Your best bet is to first start using pg free minoxidil foam and see how your skin reacts. Best of luck, keep us updated.

that's okay my friend! actually no, I had not the issue before minoxidil! because I've tried twice or more dropping it and then after a week or so they were completely gone!
Even I remember using one particular brand which I was less allergenic to!

well first of all I want to thank you so much for taking time sharing your great experiences with Minoxidil but from what I just found on google it seems that the Pg is an alcohol itself so I'm little bit confused now since you have mentioned "Pg free and Alcohol free Minoxidils" which in this case both of them are Alcohols! In fact it'd be great if you could also mentioned the scientific name of the other alcohol because it will be easier for me and everyone to find and distinguish these two substances!
and Surely I will keep updating the thread because it will be a great help for others who might be struggling with the same issue in the future!
Thank you

Hey there, when I refer to PG, I'm talking about propylene glycol, and if you check the ingredients on minoxidil bottles, you will see that just about every minoxidil product contains 'propylene glycol' in the ingredient list. The alcohol I'm talking about is Ethanol alcohol, and just like PG, just about every liquid minoxidil contains ethanol alcohol and propylene glycol.

Let's take a look at probably the most widely used Kirkland's 5% liquid minoxidil (contains pg) ingredient list:
Active ingredient: Minoxidil 5% w/v (weight per volume).
Inactive ingredient: alcohol, propylene glycol, purified water

Now let's take a look at a PG free 5% liquid minoxidil product offered by MinoxidilMax:

"Essengen-5 NO PG: 5% Minoxidil without propylene glycol compounded particularly for sensitive scalp. It is free of propylene glycol (PG, PPG). Glycerin is used in the product in place of propylene glycol that is used in other 5% minoxidil topical solution to avoid scalp irritation that occurs in some people (estimated to be 1 out of 10 users)."

Ingredients: Minoxidil 5% (i.e. 3 grams of minoxidil in bottle, i.e. 50mg/ml, Ethanol, Glycerin, Purified Water, (Please note that propylene glycol, the culprit for the itches and redness in some users, is not used in this product.)

As you can see above, ethyl (ethanol) alcohol is still used but instead of PG, glycerin is used as the vehicle for minoxidil.

Now, regarding both alcohol and pg free minoxidil, I haven't seen any commercialy used products except a few random unknown ones on ebay. I suggest you forget about it for now.

I suggest you first try switch to minoxidil foam by either Kirkland or Rogaine, or alternatively you can try a PG free liquid minoxidil by one of the companies I mentioned.

Good luck !

no offense , but maybe you should give up the hairloss battle . You have an advanced norwood .
I know the sentence , you should lift and get a tan is a bullshit , but maybe a fitness regimen could be your best option right now , if you want to lookmax , instead of applying minoxidil and getting acne

I'm waiting for the foam to see how does my skin reacts to it and if I got negative results I would probably give up the god damn battle once and for all! Actually I'm in a pretty good shape and size with just a little ( maybe more) fats on but I cant afford to get into all the fitness stuff right now since it will take a lot of time melting fats and building up muscles which definitely I cant because I have no extra time now
