A Strategy: Using Both 0.5 And 1.5 Mm Dermaroller

Hey guys,

I plan on introducing dermarolling to my regimen. My strategy would be as follow and I would need your opinion.
I plan on using the 0.5mm one 6 days a week before applying minoxidil.
The last day of the week I would use the 1.5 one.

My rationale is that I cannot use the 1.5 one everyday, so in order to still get better absorption the 0.5 might be good on classical day.

What do you guys think?

Thank you

More absorption more side effects. Its the same with retinoic acid..

Maybe you will gain a little extra hair but it also will give you puffy face dark circles ecc ..

I would look at exfoliating. I use a bores brush before applying minoxidil. I can't say it helps but it makes perfect sense.

I dermaroll every night before every minoxidil application and don't have this puffy face etc. It doesn't happen to most people.

For those who use 1.5mm, did you make the choice bcause of the study on mice which is based on that length?
I started out with 0.25mm,slowly worked my way up and now on 1mm.
I like the strategy of mixing it up with 0.5mm and 1.5mm,although I wonder if wounding and making it bleed is really necessary. If the main idea of Dermarolling is to improve topical solution absorption, wouldn't it make sense to do it daily with a shorter length by increasing blood flow, rather than wounding it once a week?
I find that if I dermaroll daily, my scalp feels fresh and exfoliated. Weekly use with a longer length however causes quite an itch during the recovery process for a few days, and I fear that I could cause the scalp consistent damage to the point that it may have a negative impact.I wish someone would conduct more studies using 0.5mm to 1mm.

I started with 1.5mm once per month. Stepped it up to once per week and it doesnt seem to have done any damage...infact its actually improved the skin where im doing it (temples). If you're worried about damage then maybe switch to an electric dermastamp rather than a roller. Rollers make bigger wounds than a stamp since they are rolling over the skin instead of just straight in and out like the stamp does. I use one of these as they are real cheap...

@Dazz_nz that's great to know!
As I have longer hair,I only use a dermastamp but a manual one. How do you find it compared to the electric version?
I guess part of me is still worried about leaving microscars(where hair won't grow) as a result of overdoing it..so I'm just stamping when I feel that scalp has recovered enough to take more stabs. While it itches during the recovery process, it's often tempting to stab more lol.

Ive also got longish hair (about 5-6inch) so it would be a pain in the *** to do my whole head (I dont need to anyway)
I can only compare it to a roller since I have those too, but I only used them once after I did a bit more research on it.
Advantages
- More hygenic since you replace the heads all the time. I brought 50 of them.
- You can adjust the depth so you dont need multiple ones
- Adjustable speed
Disadvantage
- If you are doing a large area it will take way longer than rolling since the heads only have 12 needles
- Its got a chord so it can be a bit of a pain trying to do it in the mirror without it getting in the way lol

Regardless I think its painful at 1.5, I have to use numbing cream, I brought a massive container of it.

I thought the study was 1.5 MM once a week, which massively improved minoxidil response?

Daily use seems like too much, you are not letting the scalp heal properly. Needs more time in between. It's like working out, daily workouts will leave you overtrained. The results come during the recovery period.

That's some application you got there. It looks like a vibrator. A little bit. Wouldn't know, but most of my girlfriends use them
for some reason.

Guess I'm not as satisfying as I would like to think I am! LOL :oops:o_O

Maybe you need to adjust your depth setting and add a needle tip lol

I think 4-5 times/wk use of a .5mm for a few minutes is the best idea, based on the fact the absorption increase seems to be the main (or only) benefit (I read a study saying that - derma rolling on its own had no magic properties). The once a week process was 20 minutes and probably left the scalp able to better absorb the entire week due to the extent of 'damage' (for lack of a better word). Doing it for 3 minutes 4 days a week might have the same effect. Even my semi-dull .5mm for 3 minutes leaves my scalp a little tender the next day.

From what I read, it's actually to introduce wounding, which is said to provide growth factors. If true, the goal would be to stimulate "follicular neogenesis".

Try to focus more on the wounding side of it rather the "better absorption".

Interesting. It seems that whether the main benefits from Dermarolling comes from wounding or improved absorption is very much inconclusive.
If carried out without too much damage to scalp, I guess it improves scalp health nevertheless,so perhaps I shall carry on with a balance of both theories.. wounding once a week using 1mm,and enhancing blood flow/absorption using 0.5mm whenever the scalp appears to be able to handle it.
