Admin, how do I make my own forum website?

I'll keep it simple. No profiles or ads needed.

I just want the ability to make forums and sub forums, and delete spam, appoint moderaters, and let people set up accounts with PM ability.

Do I need to hire a computer programmer, or are there ready to go sites I can get for like $120?

I want to set up a political forum. The political topics will attract some people to stay there, though my main point of the site is for the voting methods I want to promote. Mine will be stickies.

I think a CCS sex and relationships forum would be much more entertaining. :hump:

I think you should be a moderator here instead, so we can take advantage of your free time :)

The answer to your question : www.phpbb.com .... buy a domain .... and voila.

Or I could moderate a political forum on this site and get each other more traffic that way. I don't have to tell the people in my city that I'm CCS.
www.phpbb.com. Thanks.

I think you should start a dating site.

If you need any help getting started PM me. Just include all the info in the PM because I probably will just be on here for brief checkup until the weekend (busy this week).

My site is up, barely.

I have not yet figured out how to make different forums, or post stickies, or lock threads.

I did post one thread saying the site is under construction.

Looks almost nothing like this site or the old version of this site. I'm figuring it out though.

this site is phpBB based only...this admin has had a programmer customize so much of it over a year or more.

I know all the the stuff on the edges is custom. I'm just talking about the center stuff: the forum itself.

So you are saying that making threads into stickies or locking them is custom too?

Right now when I view the site, it says, "Your first category"
and then "Your first forum"
And inside the first forum, I have some threads I've posted. I've not figured out how to re-name the category or the forum or add new ones. Just threads so far.

Under the website name, I'm prompted to "add a discriptive phrase here", but I don't know how to edit it.

At least people can view the website and read the threads if they dig that far.

Pretty cheap. $8x12 up front for 1 year. A bit more than I wanted to spend all at once. But if people are going to read my flyers, it would be nice if they had a site to look at for more info, and a way to contact me, and for me to update the site so I could contact them.

where are you hosting etc?

you can get good hosting for $10 a year, with forum software thrown in and often a domain also.

Too late. Already paid $96. But I needed the live tech support or I would have taken a lot longer to figure out the free software.

It is up an running now. No hits though.

'If you build it they will come' does not apply to the internet. Post excerpts from news stories and your opinions on them as threads in your forum, then submit those threads to social bookmarking sites. Join relevant facebook groups and do the same. Comment on political blog posts with your forum url in your post or in the URL field. Start petitions or surveys with something pointing back to your forum.

etc.

Oh and one more thing, keyword rich thread urls. This is probably the biggest problem the Hairlosstalk forum has with regards to generating search engine traffic.

For instance this thread is about fear of taking the growth stimulant minoxidil

viewtopic.php?f=42&t=53957

But the url to the thread does not show that at all. The below url would be much better and is how many forums do it.

growth-stimulants/fear-of-taking-minoxidil.html

Thanks. My site still won't let me edit posts unless I delete them and start fresh. I do not recommend bluehost unless you want to do a lot of work debugging the site. They do NOT give tech support like they say. Well, they do, but not for any of the free software provided, and all of the software is free. They set up your domain and give you a access to the guts of your site, which has free plug ins which they do not cover with tech support. They tell you how to access it, and tell you where the support forums are for the free stuff.

On the support forums there are tons of people with the same problems. Often when they find the answer they do not explain it to everyone else. They just say, "Oh, I figured it out. Thanks for you help!".

I'll have to take it one step at a time for a while.
