Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and really was looking for some initial advice before taking the next steps.

So, I'm 34 (nearly) and initially I was interested in sorting out my damn facial hair (or lack of it!). Beards are all the rage and even though I can grow a first rate Burt Reynolds tash, my chops are sadly lacking in in the follicular department with the bits around my cheeks being particularly sparse.

A friend of mine recently a 'beard transplant' which immediately roused my interest. The ensuing weeks were spent investigating this procedure (FUE), the pitfalls, risks, benefits and everything else. I also looked at the idea of using Rogaine for the beard (although this is not 'advised' as it's for head-hair loss). Anyhoo, that's when I got into thinking about my head hair......

I've recently noticed some thinning around the hairline and slight thinning around the crown (although this is minimal and mainly when it's wet). I've had a similar hairline for the past 15 years or so, or since I can remember. I've got the classic widow's peak and the temple recession hasn't really got any worse, in my opinion. But now I'm at the stage where I feel like if it got any worse, I'd be starting to worry, or worry more than I currently am.

I've always been good at styling my hair in a way that it's virtually undetectable to notice the recession. That pesky wind is a problem though...one gust and it's all over the shop! I find half a bottle of hairspray usually does the job at cementing it in place!! Joke aside, I'd like to able to not use hairspray and style it naturally with a little product or no product at all.

So, overall, I changed my mind from having a beard transplant and thought I could use a small transplant at the front for the hairline. Then I thought....'hang on, am I getting ahead of myself here....lets check this out', which brought me here. There have been some really interesting stories on here with some supportive (and some not so supportive!) people, so I'm opening it up to ask you good people your thoughts and what my most sensible and logical next step is.

I've attached a few images to bring some tangibility to the above.

Oh...and my skin is extremely tough so any comments both positive and negative will be received as good advice and attempts to troll/abuse will give me a really good laugh :)

Cheers

Hello. Welcome to the forum :)

''The Big Three'', which is short for Minoxidil, Finasteride & Nizoral would be your best go to treatment. Although, I personally believe that you should opt for finasteride by itself for 6-12 months, and then go for minoxidil if you aren't happy with your hair/haven't gotten any regrowth.
Minoxidil might be a pain though, since you have to apply it regularly.

You can read more thoroughly about treatments here: https://www.hairlosstalk.com/hair-loss-treatments/

Finasteride requires a prescription, but there's the possibility of ordering it online without any hassle. Minoxidil (also known as Rogain) is prescription-free, and Nizoral is mostly to cleanse and heal your scalp if you happen to suffer from itch and whatnot.

TLDR (from the link I posted above):

'' Effective Hair Loss Treatments
The hormone sensitivity that is “turned on” by a genetic predisposition results in hair miniaturization, and inflammation. Therefore, effective hair loss treatments focus on:

  • Limiting the hormonal influence.
  • Stimulating hair growth despite it.
  • Treating the inflammation.
As a result, the three major types of hair loss treatments are:

  1. Anti-androgens
  2. Growth Stimulants
  3. Anti-inflammatories
If a treatment does not have ingredients which address one of these three major elements, then it is not an effective hair loss treatment. Period. ''
