Aichdee's Story- (21 / Losing hair since I was 17 or 18)

I'm 21 years old and have been slowly losing my hair since I was about 17 or 18. Most of my loss is in the temples with a receding hairline. Unfortunately, hair loss runs in my family as my dad and brother have both lost their hair.

About 2 months ago I decided I wanted to try and keep what I have right now so I got a prescription for propecia from the dermatologist. I also started 3 weeks ago using Nizoral 2% shampoo.

I am 2 months into the propecia and have had no side effects so far. I feel like I am going in the right direction. Also, I plan to add rogaine foam to my regimen at about the 3 month mark on propecia.

Here are some pictures of before I started the propecia:

Here are some now after 2 months:

I know it's to early for any real progress, but feel free to make any comments. Also, what Norwood would you say that I am? NW2.5-NW3?

you are indeed on the right track.

i would add rogaine as well if i were you, being as that you're only 21 and the front has already thinned out quite a bit. you obviously want regrowth, and i think minoxidil can do that for you.

propecia is expensive, see if you can be perscribed an alternative like Proscar - which comes in 5mg finasteride pills that you cut into 1/4s or 1/5s. it's alot alot alot cheaper.

i'm also fighting receeding, i am almost at 3 months on rogaine foam and 4 months on finasteride. check out my story thread as you consider rogaine.

Hey,

I think I almost have the same pattern of loss as you and am also 21 years old.

Your regimen looks good. I will be adding minoxidil to mine too shortly.

Yeah, I would like to get prescribed to proscar to make it cheaper for myself. My dermatologist didn't want to prescribe me it though.

If I can't get a prescription for proscar I might look into finpecia or finax to make it cheaper for myself. I actually contacted the FDA about when a generic propecia would be available in the US. Here is the response they gave me:

Thank you for writing the Division of Drug Information, in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

You are correct, the patent for Propecia has expired. Finasteride 1mg (generic for Propecia)has been granted tentative approval by the FDA.
This means that the drug has been proven to be safe and effective, however, either a patent or litigation is holding up the drug from
coming to market in the US. There is already a generic approved for
Proscar (finasteride 5mg).

Re: aichdee's story

Hi everyone. I am back a year and a half later just to update my progress and maybe get a few suggestions.

Well I have been on propecia for over a year and a half now and I have had pretty good progress! I definitely haven't lost any additional hair and my hair feels a lot thicker now. Unfortunately my camera isn't working so I will post new pics when I can.

I am thinking about changing up my regimen a little bit. My reason for the change is to try and grow more hair back rather than just maintain.

I have only been doing the following for the last year:
1/4 proscar a day
Rogaine Foam twice a day

This is my new plan:
Finpecia: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday
Dutas: Wednesday, Saturday
Rogain Foam: Twice every day
Nizoral: 2 days a week
1000 mg MSM: Everyday

Anyone have thoughts on this new regimen? Let me know what you guys think!
