alf's story

well, i've been looking around on this forum for a couple of months now and i figured i go ahead and post my story too.

i'm 23 almost 24. diffuse thinner. my grandfather and father both had full heads of hair well into their fifties and none of my uncles on my mom side have any noticible thinning.

about nine months ago i started noticing hair in my shower. at the time i had shoulder length hair and lots of it (always had). about a month after i started noticing the hair i decided to cut it shorter to see if maybe it was just the length that was causing the loss (some girl told me long hair falls out if you don't cut it often). the thinning didn't stop. at about the same time i was on a drun called focalin. I did some searching and found that one of the possible side effects was hair loss. so i immediately stopped taking it. about two months passed and still i was seeing at least 100 hairs a day in the shower and hair all over my floor. so i went to my derm and he told me to go on minoxidil. i went and bought the 2% and used it for about two months. the itch became to much for me to bear and had to stop. plus i wasn't seeing any decrease in hair loss. that was about two months ago. i am still losing about 150 a day. last week i went to my derm and he gave me a prescription to propecia which i haven't filled yet.

my question to anyone out there is this. should i start on the propecia or should i wait a couple more months and see if the focalin/minoxidil is what is causing my hairloss? remenber i've been off focalin for almost 6 months now and minoxidil for almost 2.

oh and there is like an invisible line from ear to ear on the top of my head that still itches daily (nothing bad but i never had this before)

are there any other people with a similar story? any feedback would be appreciated.

My answer to you is that it would definitely depend on a few factors. Ask your doctor how common the hair loss is from your medication. Alot of these meds have many "side effects" but alot of the time they are extremely rare. If hair loss is a very common side effect, I would possibly wait another two months or so before treating it agressively. Maybye just add Nizoral 2% shampoo 3x a week.

The other factors are your genetics... It's definitely strange if no one in your family even has any hair loss this young for you to experience male pattern baldness. It's absolutely possible, though.

All things considered, I would probably wait to start finasteride or minoxidil.

hairloss sometimes skips generations.

I'd suggest getting on propecia asap.

from what i understand.. hairloss is a dominant trait.. like brown eyes or brown hair. so if there is any loss in your family tree your going to get it..

i'm in a similar situation regarding family hair loss.. noonone in my family lost hair untill well into their 40's... I'm 26 w/ diffuse thnning.

I really think that more younger people are suffering from hair loss these days.. i think it's either enviornment or nutritional problems that older people didnt deal with growing up.. who knows..

anyway, good luck bud..

Well, I dedided to take the plunge and started taking Propecia about week ago. So far nothing to really report except the itch that was pretty bad before has almost completely stopped.

I do have one question, the day before i started taking propecia, i got my hormone levels checked, so i could compare them later on, and my DHT level was 263. The expected range is 50-170. This could explain alot seeing how noone else in my family suffers from male pattern baldness. Has anyone here heard of possible reasons why someones DHT levels would be so high. I have scheduled a appointment with my doctor, but would like to know some possible reasons for the higher than normal levels before i go to see him.

Thanks
