Hello all,

I am a 19 year old about to turn 20 in a a couple weeks. At first, I started noticing that I would lose a lot of hairs in the shower while running my hands through my scalp. I would see around 20 or so hairs on my hand. What bothered me though is that some of the hairs were very fine. Also, I have always had a large forehead, but to me it seems that my temples have receded a little bit. More of my scalp is also visible through my head.

I went to a dermatologist and he did a full blood test on me and everything came back normal, including my iron and hormone levels. The dermatologist however, doesn't think that I am losing my hair. Still, I convinced heim to give me a prescription for brand Propecia and 2% Nizoral. I have started using the Nizoral but am going to wait on the Propecia until I hear some opinions from you guys.

Here are some pictures, keep in mind that I have always had a large forhead:
Front with flash
Hairline with flash
Right temple with flash
Left temple with flash
Front without flash
Hairline without flash
Left temple without flash
Right temple without flash

So should I start the Propecia?

I'd also like to add that I smoke cigarettes and pot occasionally. I also lost about 10 pounds in the last two months. Could that be the cause of my hair loss?

Also, I just took my first Propecia tablet today. Should I continue or get off of it?

May be the start of it. If you had a large forehead always, although it does look like it's a bit thinning, where you hair starts.

You may not be going bald though. It might have always been that way. Have you got any pictures from before you considered that you may be losing it.

I would go on Propecia and try to keep what you have, also Nizoral just now, you could add minoxidil if you want to change your hairline.

Honestly, I don't think you're going bald as a lot of people's hairlines look like that. However, like the above poster said, it could be the start of it, so look at old pics and see if there's a noticeable difference. Sometimes we just notice things because we're hearing a lot about them.

i´d stay on finasteride (propecia) and only go off of it if u get sides. if it gets expensive, buy proscar and split it into 4ths (which is what i do) or buy generic.

In my opinion I think you are losing your hair. I'd get a few more of the experts on this site's opinion.

hair looks a little thin and i can see quite a few of what looks like miniturized (shorter, thinner hairs) in the first pic, you've got a good hairline tho.

i think its the start of male pattern hair loss ,sticking with propecia & nizoral would be a good idea i think.

Anyone else think he should just go to the docotor and talk about it? I think finasteride at 19 is too young. Your body may still be using DHT for other things than begining hairloss.

about the cig and herb smoking...
i dont think it has much to do wit it..
im sure it has some relation to health issue and all but
i have so many buddies smoking both (and some smoke other stuff too) everyday.. EVERYDAY and they still have too much hair on their head
it can't be that..
i smoke cig / weed as well but i doubt its cuz of smoking..

Like all the young guys in this forum, you are kidding yourself. The scale you will very soon be at is called TBFNO. Totally Bald From Now On. You must face the cold, hard (and bald) truth. Your hair is retiring from your head, and moving to Sun City, Arizona, via your shower drainpipe. By the way, if you want to continue to hope that by changing any habits- such as smoking, bad diet, etc.- will instantly return your boyish hair, just remember: skinny, alcoholic, chain-smoking junkie Kurt Cobain had perfect blonde, surfer-dude hair that you will never have. Look in the mirror, and accept the fact that you are very rapidly becoming a bald man. There is no cure for baldness, so stop wasting money on snake-oil. Thieves are just going to prey on your despair and humiliation. Be brave. Be strong. Be bald!!!![/b]

Get on finasteride, your hairline is definetly developing into a V-shape. On a Norwood scale you are still a Norwood 1.5 imo. Good Luck!

Well JayMan, the reason I'm here, is to try and help you guys from wasting your 20s deluding yourselves that you can transform effortlessly from being a rapidly bald man back to your boyishly headhairy "look at me!-I'm only 16!" days. I'm 40, and started to get bald at 18. Humiliating? Hell yes! Did it make me feel like my life was over? Hell yes! Did I grasp at straws? Kidding myself that gluing a 1970s shag carpet remnant to the top of my chromedome would fool everyone? Hell yes!! Actually, I never glued carpet to my head. You would call it a "HairSystem". I looked at the little dork president of Hairclub For Men, and realized if he looks like a squirl died on his shiny bald head, then there is no "cure" for being a permenant baldo. Accept my advice. I'm only trying to help you. As of 2006, baldness has no enemy. One day, maybe. Not now. Be a man, and accept being bald. Just tell yourself over and over that you are now a proud, strong, bald man. Emphasis on the word "Man"! Good luck.[/b]
