Am I receeding, or maturing?

I'm 19, no history of baldness even from grand parents.. Forehead has always been large. The other side of my hairline is thick and less high, just this one side. Parents telling me it's maturing and not thinning or I'm not gonna go bald. No treatment options where I live if that is the case..... :( all pictures of the left side.

You still have a very good hairline bud, very solid and your family history is a key indicator. Just keep an eye on it and if you notice it continuing to change or you notice thinning, see a dermatologist.

The first picture shows your hair combed upwards, a lot of hair types will show scalp under light in this scenario - you’ll see it in females too. Especially where hair is fine and even more so, if straight too. The problem with hair is that photos, angles and lighting are very misleading, try to trust your own judgement when your looking in the mirror in normal conditions, clean freshly washed and dried hair etc.

Thanks. Why so much scalp when I pull it over??? Just big forehead. Looks so receeded here, is it just angles?? uneven here :(Screenshot_20210130_221411.jpg

No worries - I don’t think the amount of scalp is excessive, hairlines differ, even in children. Plus pulling your hair over exacerbates the situation.

If you are receding, you are aware early so you can monitor and consider treatments if you notice further changes - but your hair could be as it is now for years. Just keep an eye on it and see a dermatologist if you notice a decline.

Be careful not to obsess, I’ve been there and the more you look, the more you only see the scalp and miss everything else with your hair that is great - your mind then can play tricks on you!

So even that birds eye view photo, though quite uneven is definitely just mature? I thought it was severely receeding. I think it's slightly changed over the years. I have baby hairs or the hair is receeded slightly. Even if it has receeded slightly on one side I guess you said it isn't too bad... So I'll see a doctor. Can a GP tell? Because I can't see a dermatologist unless I talk to a doctor first.. And the only dermatologist is one airplane flight away as my country is two separate islands.

If you recreated the same scenario with another male who is not balding, you would likely see a similar shape hairline from that angle, unless they have retained their juvenile hairline from childhood, which is rare in caucasian males.

I cannot say for certain it is mature but given your family history, the odds are in your favour. I'm afraid only time will tell if your hair will recede further but at this stage, in my view your hair looks good. I'm a lot older than you (41) and over the last 20 or so years, I have observed the hair of many of my friends and colleagues. What I have noticed is that true balding is normally aggressive from a young age. Lots of men lose their juvenile hairline early and then that is all, for many years, sometimes life. Those that went bald, suffered very fast recession, and or, rapid lose of density and hair quality across the top of their scalp. From what I can see, you do not appear to be in this position. However, I'm afraid that can change, for all of us, so just keep an eye your hair and if it genuinely starts to deteriorate, see a derm and consider treatments.

Regarding GP's, I personally found them to be no help at all when it comes to hair loss. No harm in speaking with your GP though if you are concerned.

What is your father's hairline like? The science says that the balding gene is 51/49 in favour of the Mother's genes, however, I have very rarely met a bald man who's Father was not bald also. Again, your family history is the strongest indicator you have.

Father is about 55, full set of thick ish hair. Mum has a juvenile hairline, curly ish hair. My hair is naturally curly unless combed. Mum's father had good hair but about 80 years old it was receeding.. Maybe earlier. But he definitely had hair even in death. And was kinda receeding though in his early ages, but not that bad.

Mums mother has thick hair and she is about 70. Still a lot of hair on his head though. Mum's brother is bald due to something toxic apparently, not genes. Dad's dad had good hair and dad's mother. Don't know more than that, but yeah.

Do you have any older brothers? If yes, what is their hairline like?

Has your father’s hairline receded? If yes, ask him when he first noticed it.

Father's hairline hasn't receeded, my sisters have healthy hair but one is losing hair due to diet nothing else. Just found out, mum's dad had hair but had the male pattern baldness island on the front. But not bald at all. Dad's dad had hair but in the photos when he was grey, he receeded and wasn't bald though. Just had less hair. I'm doomed lmao. Do you think since two grand parent had receeding and old age I definitely will or maybe not since mum and dad both have good hair?

It’s not definite but there is a chance. Remember, you are a mix of both parents genes.

Nothing to panic about though. It’s good to be aware, so you can monitor for changes. At 19 years old, if you are going to bald aggressively, you will notice changes over the next year or two no doubt. If you notice change, take action and you can halt hair loss.

Looking at your hair, I don’t really see that happening. But be vigilant and see a derm in due course. You might be able to get an online consultation. Where in the world are you?

New Zealand. Also... My dad's father was receeding at an old age.. When he was grey. Maybe that is normal though, but I feel I'm doomed. Both grand parents had hair just thinned at an old age and receeded. I try not be sad over this. And

- no dermatologist in my area, I'd have to travel to the North island and would cost 500 dollars.

You’re far from doomed, honest, there’s every chance you’re not even balding. And if you are, it can be treated, there are many options in this regard.

I would just monitor if I were you, but it you need peace of mind try and find a hair loss specialist for a consultation.

As norwoody said, your density and hair quality looks great, a very good sign indeed.

Does this mean maybe its a awful hairline, or is is healthy and solid. For now.?
Not an awful hairline by any means. Looks like a solid NW1.5 right now and doesn't look like it will progress fast based on the density. My hairline is quite similar but your density is better.

Yeah I agree with Ourkes. I wouldn't mess with it yet, just keep an eye on it.
Thanks Mr woody. How's buzz? No pun intended.

Do you think these pictures here Screenshot_20210131_173119.jpgSnapchat-986335559.jpg

Show the same hair line? First one from last year (actually looks bit worse) vs now are relatively the same. Or do you think it receeded until a straight line that's why I can't see much of a gap like the first one? Maybe it's lighting.

Also by progress do you mean I will eventually lose my hair. Because doesn't 1.5 Norwood scale mean, receeding. Another person is receeding on a post and they are 1.5 or something

Everyone is different but good density is a very good sign. I was norwood 1.5 in my 20s and hit norwood 2 about 30. No change since and I’m nearly 42. Always had good density.

xD

IMO the density looks even more solid in the second pic, so I would consider that healthy maturation at this point. Hairline is just straightening. I don't see any rounding pattern whatsoever. Your temporal hairline, the side, is also straight and not rounding so that is good.

The scale is kind of arbitrary since hairlines come in all kinds of shapes. But as a general rule for me, a 2 is what would be described as a fully matured hairline. So even if it goes higher, it still retains the same shape and there are no signs of it going farther. You look like you're just finishing up the maturation stage so I'd just call it 1.5 but soon to be a healthy looking 2. IMO recession or balding is anything that is 2.5 or higher. I wouldn't be super concerned at this point, just keep an eye on it every couple of months.
