Does oral phenytoin cause hair growth? I'm assuming that's how they found out about using it topically.

Anyway, today i saw a patient who has epilepsy and other things, and despite being well over 50 he has a completely full and thick head of hair. Now this is probably his genetics, but I also noticed he was very hairy everywhere else. Most of the time it's the bald people who have body hair, but this guy had a large amount of arm and chest hair.

It was interesting because on closer examination he even had sporadic fine hair growing between his sideburns and eyebrows! I asked about his medication and he's taking phenytoin.

Just thought i'd share it, and it could be some evidence of phenytoin's ability to grow hair for topical phenytoin users... all seven of you! :p
