Antidepressants and hair loss

I have read through many of the posts and noticed some of the discussion about antidepressants and hair loss.

I was wondering for those of you that have/are taking antidepressants. Just wondering if your hair loss was before you started treating it? Could you still stop hair loss with the big 3 if you were on an antidepressant? I would hope that you could be on an antidepressant and be still be able to stop losing your hair with a rogaine and propecia regimen.

Also, my doctor has recommended either Lexapro or Wellbutrin. Would one be better than the other? Do you know of any that are not supposed to contribute to hair loss (ie, such as the Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors.....such as Lexapro)? I know that Wellbutrin is in a class of its own, while Lexapro is from the SSRI family.

Sorry for all of the questions, I just obviously want to minimize any more hair loss. I don't know how much clinical evidence there is to this, so any opinions are welcome.

By the way, I should add

that I was on Serzone for awhile. I was going to switch because it hasn't been working well enough. Even then I seemed to be growing some hair back, and I got lazy and quit the Rogaine for 3-4 months ago. Big mistake!!! I have noticed significant thinning since then. I started the rogaine again, is it possible I can get most of that hair I lost back?

Hello There,

I am on Paxil 12.5mg. I noticed my hairloss before starting the medication. Paxil has helped me deal with anxiety and depression but I'm thinking about slowly coming off of it (1 pill every other day, and so on). I figure it is doing nothing to help my hairloss and I should be able to deal with my depression on my own.

Well, I am on Paxil 40mg (approx 2 months), I have noticed a minor loss of density however I moreso attribute that to the fact that I stopped applying folligen daily, which I will resume. Arguably ssri's are good for hairloss as a stress decreaser. My anecdotal experience with paxil is that it probably has not caused an increase in hairloss or decrease in hairgrowth for me. Off topic: from my experience with Paxil I can verify that it does make achieving errections more challenging.

TNTguy, I took Welbutrin to quit smoking, I didn't have any hairloss problems that occured.

Does anyone have any proof that drugs like Zoloft can cause hairloss? I don't actually take it for depression so I don't really need it, in other words, I wouldn't mind stopping if it's only going to help hairloss.
