Hi guys,

has anyone experience how to stop minoxidil to avoid shedding of healthy non-minoxidil-dependant hair? I would like to stop with it and I am OK if I lose something that I have gained on it (I think I have gained zere) but dont want to "shock" my hair.

I have been on minoxidil for 4 months.[/i]

Taper-off slowly.

Yes, I am going to plan this. I would like to start only with night applications and then gradually apply e.g. each second day and so on. How would you suggest to lower dosage, I mean each two weeks remove one day application or so?

Yes, or simply use a smaller and smaller quantity each application. Like reduce the dose from 1 mL to 1/2 mL for a month or so, then reduce it to 1/4 mL, etc.

I wouldn't think that your hairs that haven't been effected by male pattern baldness would be effected by minoxidil so I'm not sure if it would matter if you went cold turkey or slowly weened off of it? Either way any hairs you gained will be lost eventually.

Why are you stopping after only 4 months anyways? You do realize that hair takes time to grow and it could take up to a year to fully see its benefits?

This is main reason. Minoxidil is simply "chemical wig" which I have realized in last days. It makes your hair more messy and it is really time consuming. You can eat pills anywhere and there is no much hassle about it, but I can not image puting something on my head for years.

Propecia worked for some people many years, even 10 years if you create conditions for finasteride. minoxidil works for few years and I dont think it can regrowth many hair at front. I just need to maintain what I have at front and temples now. If all hair would have same thickness and I could halt my male pattern baldness for 20 years, I would be satisfied.

I rather focus on topicals (if any) that have anti-inflammation or anti-androgenic effect because they can reverse hair loss. minoxidil just camouflage male pattern baldness and do nothing for stopping or slowing it down.

I guess you can't get foam where you are? No irritation at all. Doesn't affect styling. Is working great for me.

You should probably be adding the pills to the foam and not quitting minoxidil altogether. I had my own wacky health history but I'll add finasteride to my regimen if we are successful in having a kid.

Irritation is not the main issue. The big problem is that you have to put something on your head twice per day regularly. It does not sound like freedom for me.

If it would work everywhere and for 10 could halt complete hairloss, I would re-consider but it does not. It works for 2 years so not very good treatment for me.

It's kinda like brushing your teeth: if you want to keep your teeth, you have to brush and floss every day, despite the lack of "freedom".

I don't know of any evidence that minoxidil ever stops working. The only problem is that minoxidil alone probably doesn't really interfere with the fundamental balding process.

yeah, you've got to take a shower every day, sometimes twice, even three times. You have to put on deodorant. You have to clean your room, do your laundry, cut the lawn, hell, you have to EAT three times a day.

Quitting minoxidil because of loss of freedom means you're probably a slob.

I dont believe you are serious.

Why do you do something about your hair? Well, I do something because I want my hair to look simply best, as much as it is possible. If you put something that stick your hair together, your hair will not look much better.

Also, you it can affect your forehead, which did for me. My forehead is bloated little but, or simply is not so smooth as it has been. Even this is really big minus.

How you can compare it to cleaning your teeth? If you do this, your teeth are in great condition and they look great. If you put minoxidil into your hair, your hair look worse than if you would use only some styling ads alone.

And yes, eating Finasteride takes about three seconds. Let me ask you guys, do you live alone? After shower, when you walk into bedroom where is your girlfriend naked and you make lov...you f*ck her, do you tell her "OK honey, just wait I will put minoxidil on my head and wail till it is dry"? :)

What are you doing when you spend night with your friends? When you are tired and want to go bed right now? When you hurry to work?

Taking shower is really nice, it makes you clean. I really enjoy having some food. minoxidil makes your hair pretty messy and you can not deny it. I feel like a slave that I must spend each day 30 minutes with minoxidil (apply and wait till it dry).

I can speak to this because this same situation happened last weeknd. I told her to hold on a sec while I used the bathroom. Applying the Rogaine foam took me 1 minute total, and it dried within seconds after applying it. It dries a lot faster than the liquid and doesn't make the hair look bad either.

again you must be talking about the liquid because the foam is just so convenient. it's like applying mousse.

JayMan - no I was talking about Spectral DNC. It dries fast too, but it also stick hair together and I dont like this.

I was considering Foam too but I completely quit minoxidil right now and will see what happen. I think it did nothing to me, especially at right temple which has been almost new but receeded little bit in last 6 months (about 1/3 inch).

RaginDemon - :) yeah I did this finally so I will just see what happen. My hair stop falling out completely right now, if I stand above white paper and run my fingers many times through hair. I hope it is only stopped Telogen Effluvium and not result from minoxidil cause even shedding stopped, I receeded little bit.

As I say I am trying not let hair loss to control my life completely and I would like to experiment and find solution which helps me some kind of reverse - than I could stop thinking about it. On minoxidil, I would know that my hair is dependant on it so I would have to think about it all the time.

It's not like you have to give her a full report every time you use the bathroom. Do you inform her every time you have to drop a deuce as well? Besides, if she can't handle the fact that you use minoxidil, she probably won't deal well with a receding hairline either. I wouldn't let her make this decision for , or any other woman for that matter, because it's your hair. I'd at least give the foam a go before you give up. A lot of people agree that it works better for styling. I know I'm a fan.

Come on guys dont catch me on word :) It was just en example, I have no experience like this but when I am doing something, I am always considering how it will look like and how will I implement this into my life. There was no comment from girlfriend.

Main reason is that I think it did not help to stop recession at all in last 4 month. I have bloated forehead to some degree. I have noticed really big vein at one temple which is something I really dont like.

I am just talking about situations that can happen. I dont want to spend my whole life in bathroom:) I never did. How do you apply Minoxidil when you came from club in late night? When you are at your friends house?

I know that Minoxidil is helpful but it is not solution that will hold your hairline for 10 years. You need Finasteride/Dutasterid to work for you or you will receede, even if slowly.

If you tell me now that I could hold this hair and just thicken everything at front so these hair will be same as those at back, I take it and I am happy. So I need something that will hold my hair as it is at least and improve it little bit at front - so I can stop thinking about it all the time. Slowing down is not a solution and I will simply have to shave it.

Btw. if you are genetically predisposed to Diabetes II, you will also take only drugs to solve the problem? It means that you have to change something that is causing you this. So not taking drugs but change your diet is the cure in Diabetes II.

But you would say it is genetics because father had Diabetes II, grand-father had Diabetes II so diet has nothing to do with diet because my friend eat the same food and is OK. Do you see how it is ridiculous??

Even high stress can affect your hormones and speed up your male pattern baldness if you have male pattern baldness. Cortisol when really high can cause many damage.

Again, nothing agains Finasteride or Dutasteride, but it is simply not enough for 95%.

Sounds like you should consider transplants. You won't be dependent on drugs to keep the hair. It sounds like everything else is going to require upkeep.

maybe you have to be a bit more relaxed with your minoxidil. I dont think its a disaster when you dont aply twice everyday... Just try do do it with your normal routine. And when your girlfriend is all hot... f*** the minoxidil! Just apply it a few hours later or skip it and only apply it in the evening. When I`m out with friends I wait till i get home or skip it. When I`m on holiday I only apply it only when I have the chance and it doesn`t intervene with fun stuff. I try to apply mine twice a day but for the reasons described above I sometimes forget to apply it. Think you need to be more relaxed about your minoxidil. I think the people who compare it with brushing your teeth are right, when you never brush your teeth your gone loose them but when you forget to brush sometimes its no disaster! Just include it in your routine and when things get in between just try to apply it a bit later or skip it when you dont have the time. Beeing all stressed out about it and having it come in the way of fun will loose you more hair...
