Anyone Else Want To See the Draft Come Back?

I mean a real draft, with no "my daddy is rich so I'm going to report the Alabama National Guard once a month" type of loopholes. I mean politicians kids have to go too.
I think it would be a great idea, for two reasons.
1) It would prevent military adventures like Iraq. If Bush thought there was a possibility of Jenna and Barbara going to Baghdad, I doubt he would have been so cavalier about sending other people's kids there and then saying "Bring 'em on."
2) When the necessity for war arose (WWII, Afghanistan, etc.), the burden would not only be on the few, it would be on everyone. People wouldn't be doing 3 tours.

Errrr no. I'm not American, but just no.

It's an outdated idea that was dropped because people don't want to go off and die because the the government tells them too, a pawn in someone else's game. You're being naive if you think the rich would sacrifice their children in war, that's for the likes of us, great method of population control.

Not forgetting that America and England had to manipulate their own citizens to support a war in Iraq with false dodgy evidence for WMD and false flag terrorism.

So, I couldn't disagree more.

In America, the armed forces is full of the working poor. Pretty much no one else serves.
Like I said, I would only support a no-loopholes draft, and I think that a draft that included everyone, men and women, rich and poor, would have prevented Iraq.

Isn't that how it is in Israel? Everybody _must_ serve a stint in the Armed Forces? I think that's a good idea, too.

Yep, that's Israel.

I hear what you're saying Clay, I just can't see a no loop hole draft ever existing. The rich kids will always have a way out.

If Labour ever draft me I can assure them that the only rounds I fire will be into Parliament.

The problem with conscription is that it destroys the morale of the army. Conscription during the Vietnam War was a disaster. Non-professional soldiers are un-motivated, "fragging" during Vietnam was a very serious problem. And, on top of that, you can go into the impact that conscription had on the society back home...

Then again, the more I think about it, I suppose if you wanted to AVOID war, conscription in America might not be all that bad of an idea? It undermines the effectiveness of the troops abroad, and destroys the social order at home.

I can't think of a better deterrent to war than having to re-live the 70's being a consequence.

"Mister President... should we invade Iran?"
"Let's hold back on that. I'd rather avoid ripping up the social fabric of the nation as a result... and besides, I don't want to bring that wardrobe of fashion back into style. It would scare my children."

And as for the Israeli situation... one of the Israeli participants on this board can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that Israeli conscripts doing their "military obligation" are NOT sent into front line "tip of the spear" type military operations. They mostly do civil stuff and garrison duty, similar to what our national guard does. If Israel mounts a serious military offensive, they do NOT use conscripts for this and instead use units comprised of professional soldiers. The conscripts follow the professionals, and engage mostly in mop up work at most.

CORRECTION: "Labour" is one political party, even though there's a number of individuals in it. Therefore, you should have written that: "If Labour ever drafts me..."

WHACK!
