Anyone Had Sides On finasteride Then Successfully Used Topical finasteride Instead?

When I used to use finasteride I had ball pain to the point where I had to stop. Been using RU since, but wondering whether topical finasteride (MinoxidilMax) might be worth a try...

I used finasteride for 1-2 years, and stopped because the watery semen wouldn't go away. I am not sure how much it impacted my libido, but I thought that if this stuff turns my semen into water, imagine what it's doing to the rest of my body that I don't know about

I completely stopped for a year, and started topical finasteride with PG + ethanol about 3 months ago. No sides, but no effects either. I know that 3 months is too short to notice effects, but when I took oral finasteride I almost instantly noticed that my hair looked more black and more alive

Never tried topical finasteride but it's worth a shot, i never had any sort of ball ache from finasteride but from other people that have mentioned it as a side it usually subsides in time, how long were you taking oral finasteride for before stopping? it's cheap enough on minoxidilmax so try for yourself. Hope it works out for you.

I had sides on 1mg orally, but topically I started with 0.025% and now I use topical 0.1% by compounding pharmacy, working fine and libido is great.

I did 0.25 mg topical finasteride for 5 months and didn’t have any sides, but also never saw any indication that it was doing anything. Possibly I didn’t use it long enough to be able to tell

Don’t want to derail the thread, but has RU been working for you? I’m on it for 2 months and still nothing. It’s possible that AA topicals just don’t work for me.

Yeah it's working for me in that it's maintaining (been on it since 2014). I ordered one of the free sample bottles from Minoxidilmax as I'm waiting for a shipment of RU that seems to have been delayed due to Covid :/ Also ordered another from another vendor but still waiting for that one too...Hope it gets here soon!

Never heard of this topical RU.

What's a good read-up on this? Any potential side affects, and is it hard to get a prescription for?

Wow, 5+ years on RU?

So you're maintaining? And do you have any side effects? Also did you use fina in the past, did that help?

Yeah, seem to be maintaining. I used finasteride for 11 months which also maintained for that period of time, however I got ball pain which became so bad I had to stop. I tried restarting at much smaller doses but it kept coming back. I have had the same side effect on RU but milder, and if it persisted I just reduced the dosage (started originally at 20mg/day, now down to 10mg/day without sides). Never got any regrowth on finasteride or RU though.

It's not an approved drug, you have to order it from China for 'research purposes'. The company which had the patent went bankrupt I think, never got past phase 1 or 2 trials. It's similar to CB except you need much less and it's a lot cheaper, however the downside is unlike CB it can give typical anti-androgen side effects like people taking finasteride can get. Apparently you can get it over the counter in hair loss formulations in Indonesia.

Can I just ask, those of you who got sides, did you get your blood work carried out to see if anything was out of whack?

Wait, so, what is the dose of RU that you've been maintaining on? 10 mg?

FML, I can't even maintain on 75 mg per day.

Whats the science behind this pegasus? never heard of this

These drugs don't just block the androgen receptor when they bind to it, they degrade the receptor. It's something being looked at for castration resistant prostate cancer. It hopefully solves the problem of AR upregulation. People like @whatevr probably have mutant AR that can't be overcome. God help him if he ever gets prostate cancer.

Maintenance on 10 mg/day of RU is surprising. Are you sure you were balding to begin with? I'm only asking because half the people on this site who declare victory over hairloss never even seemed to have it in the first place. Can you share any pics?

Haha bro I wish it was so mild that it was hard to tell whether or not I was balding. I was a NW4 but had a transplant in 2014. My biggest regret is that I didn't discover RU earlier (started in 2014) until well after being forced to drop finasteride in late 2012. If the finasteride sides had been the standard impotence etc, I probably would have just kept using it but nothing worse than constant physical pain IMO.

In 2014 I started following the regime of El Duterino who also maintained on a small amount of RU (minoxidil, 20mg RU mixed into Garnier Stemoxydine) but eventually reduced to 10mg after onset of sides after a couple of years. I think he reduced to 10mg as well before switching to CB. I remember reading on hairlosshelp someone had worked out that 10-20mg RU should adequately saturate the androgen receptors, but could have just been broscience of course.

I have also been microneedling since Feb 2019 (1.25 - 1.5mm Derminator 2), hasn't seemed to do much but might be helping me maintain. I'm also looking at adding Sandalore to the mix after seeing James Dunn's results.

Lol thanks bro, that's a really positive thing to read on a Sunday morning :D

Anyway, I don't think I'm that special for failing on high dose RU. On the German forums up to 5% RU is a commonly used mix, and there are numerous people there who still lose hair on 75-100 mg daily. I'm not saying it doesn't work at all in my case, it slows things down and seems to thicken the existing hair, but I definitely still keep losing on it.

I assume you used to use finasteride based on your profile regimen; have you tried microneedling + minoxidil? A bunch of people seem to respond really well - getting regrowth and maintenance even without an anti-androgen.

Kane sells RU I have tried the stuff at 5% KB solution from Anagen Inc, works and is stronger than Finesteride. I also noticed for the side effects to disappear when stopped is less than Finesteride.
