I am currently taking 5MG of Finasteride generic for Proscar. Does anyone else take just finasteride? Is it just as helpful as Propecia? I was also wondering how long it takes for Finasteride to kick in? I have been on it since probably June or July and have yet to see any results.

Thanks.

Why not? An acceptable finasteride dose is pretty darned arbitrary, spanning a range of a couple orders of magnitude.

Is it not dangerous to be taking that much?

You think 5 mg/day is a lot? What about that early testing I've mentioned so many times in which volunteers took as much as 80 mg/day for a few months, with no problems at all? And you're worried about only 5 mg? :)

Hey Bryan you might have A's this but I am not sure

If this is the case why do some people experience sides at 1mg but not at .5mg and some no sides at .25 and sides at .5

Any theory on why this would cause sides even though at the end which ever dose you chose pretty much blocks the same amount of DHT...?

I take 5mg 3x/week. Mon/Wed/Fri. It works great. Staggered doses like that give me no sides at all too.

I'm not convinced that there really ARE any such people! :)

Did you see that study I posted a while back which found that the reported incidence of side effects from finasteride was much greater if the new patients were first told about all the possible side effects that might occur? The implication is obvious, isn't it?

I think a lot of this "side effect" stuff with finasteride is mostly in guys' heads. All you have to do is plant the idea in some of them that something is going to go wrong with the male equipment down there, and sure enough, it happens! :) Likewise, I suspect that when some guys start taking a smaller dose than normal, they react in a psychsomatic way, and some of those supposed "side effects" miraculously go away! :)

Seriously at 80mg a day you'd have no man left in you , you'd be a giant blob of tits that gets moody and has no hair.. I'll stick to my 1mg a day thank you!

I realize you may only be joking here, but nevertheless thanks for helping to perpetuate the myth (common on hairloss sites) that it's very important to get just the right dose of finasteride (not too much, not too little).

<SIGH>

Then how do you explain people like me, then? I quit finasteride, expecting sexual side effects to go away within a few weeks, but they are still there, 7 months later. I'm also curious how an idea in my head almost removed spontaneous erections during the day. Before finasteride I used to get them all of the time, without thinking about sex.

No one has answered my question. Do not concern yourself with how much I take. The reason I am taking Finasteride is because of my prostate. I just happen to also have a receeding hairline. So, I am killing two birds with one stone. I was just curious if taking plain old Finasteride over Propecia or Proscar was still effective for fighting hairloss?

Thanks guys!

Of course. That's what Propecia and Proscar are: plain old finasteride! :)

Thanks for the reply. I honestly figured that plain finasteride. was the same as Propecia, but I haven't got any response or regrowth yet and was worried...

I always try to choose my words carefully. Notice that I didn't say that ALL of it is in guys' heads, I said a LOT of it is.
