Are SLS in Shampoo really bad for hair?

Sodium Laurate Sulphate (SLS) are main ingredients of shampoos but they serve to act as foaming agents only and their effect on scalp is no good. Whats your take on this?

I have a feeling it might be hype generated by organic-based companies, geared toward scaring you into buying their products.

some organic shampoos dun foam and they give the people an impression they do not wash hair thoroughly as a result of not foaming...

Yeah I know, you need to lather twice because of it. The second lathering is always much better. I use J.A.S.O.N. shampoos and they are very thick & chalky. The first lathering gives you virtually no suds at all.
