I'm currently 20 years old and actually about to reach the big 2-1. Anyways, it wasn't until about mid-year of last year that I began to notice my hair loss. Prior to, I kept my hair long, and it was probably hard to identify any loss at all because I have thick, wavy hair (I still do for the most part). However, it was at that time that I decided to have my hair buzzed. Once it was shortened, I saw there was a noticeable patch of finer hair on my right temple. I gave little thought to it and thought maybe my poor nutrition and diet (I had lost a lot of weight since my junior year in high school) might be the cause for it. After a few months worth of time I wanted to see a dermatologist because I also have a half-brother who is balding. I didn't think much of it, though, because his dad was also bald whereas my dad still has a full head of hair (NW2 - very slight thinning, if any). Anyways, I went to the dermatologist, and after a quick inspection, he claimed that I did indeed have male pattern baldness. However, he said I caught it at a very early time and that treatment would more than likely be effective. He prescribed me Propecia. I wish, however, that he would have taken a picture or mapped for minituarization for later assessment. I have since been taking Propecia and after browsing this forum as a guest I have included Nizoral and T/Gel into my regime.
Currently, I am a NW2, however, I developed a mature hairline in high school. So, to be honest, it has not really receeded any further since then. However, I have noticed that my hair has become somewhat finer (minituarized) in the frontal area, primarily in the temple regions. I have very slight thinning in the mid/crown area as well.
After taking Propecia I have noticed that my hair, thusfar, has become slightly thicker, I shed MUCH less, and my crown has had a pretty nice reversal since I've started (it was never really bare to begin with, but some of the finer hairs made it more noticeable).
FYI - I have been on the medication somewhere between 4 1/2 to 5 months. I haven't seen any drastic results, but then again, I am not expecting to for another 3-4 months AT LEAST.
I did have a side effect to the mediaction, though. A very good one. I used to have pretty hairy forearms and legs. I wouldn't say that much of the hair has disappeared, but my hair there has become MUCH finer, to the point where it's barely even noticeable. Hell, I'd stay on the medication just for that.
I thought about trying minoxidil. as well, but I don't know if I could deal with the hassle of applying it twice daily and at specific intervals of time, and I would rather wait to see just how effective Propecia will be alone.
Oh, and I must thank everybody on this website for their tremendous effort to help others with this problem and for providing useful, logical approaches to resolving it. Much appreciation! = )
