Bald/balding people you know...

... and how its seemed to effect them. I'm 19 and NW2, so I'm pretty new to worrying about baldness. That said, at first I was 100% concerned about my own baldness and started noticing the baldness of other people in my life. I have 5 uncles on my dads side. My dad, and two of his brothers have perfect hair. My dad is a NW1 at 45, and my two uncles, both in their 40s, are NW2's.

However, I have another uncle who is in his early 30s. He lives across the country so I dont see him that much. Anyways, I wasnt a Norwood spotter in my early teens so I just thought of him as a guy with a full head of hair. Looking back on it now, seeing pics of him in 2007/2008 he was thinning really badly.

When he came over in 2009, I was 17, he was wearing a hat the whole time. He then took it off, revealing he was now about a NW4. In my mind I was like "WTF happened to your hair!", because up to this point I was completley unaware he was balding. Looking at some of his FB pics now, I noticed something strange. There isnt a single picture of him up where he isnt wearing a hat. I guess my uncle is a hat prisoner. He was always a vain, and some would even say cocky guy, so it makes sense that it hit him so hard. He even made jokes in one of my other uncles baby's pictures on FB "wow, he has more hair then me! Lol". I really wonder how he is taking it, I wish I could ask him.

I also have a friend who is a year younger then me, and really prides himself on his hair and looks. He always had long , flowing hair, so I never could see his hair loss. Recently hes cut it short, and I've noticed he is a solid NW2. Not noticeable to the untrained eye yet. I hope its just a mature hairline, I think he would take baldness even worse then I'm taking it :(

It sucks when the bald guy tries to get the jokes in about his hairloss before anyone else does, lol.

Most of my friends are still NW1, bastards. I have one friend who's approaching NW3, but he has less to fear as he spent his high school years shaving his head, and looked good doing it. It might help balding guys if they shaved their heads, just so they knew what they were dealing with. Anyway, he never mentions it, so either he hasn't noticed or he doesn't care!

Only other guys I know with hair loss are two solid NW4s at 22-23. One lost it rapidly after high school, and shaves it off. He looks surprisingly good for a tall gawky skinny guy, and got engaged recently to a good looking girl :bravo:

The other was a strong NW3 at 17. He keeps it reasonably short, but pretty much looks middle aged due to his hair, face, and the face he doesn't really take care of himself. He's a smart, cocky guy, and seems more surprised than he should be that he isn't very successful with women. I think there's a moral here lol.

There was one guy in my highschool, a year ahead of me. One of the biggest douchebags I've ever known. Looking back on it, he was easily a NW2.5 in highschool approaching NW3. I saw him in the mall the other day and he is NW4 currently. I feel kind of bad for him since losing hair is almost something I wouldnt even wish on my worst enemy, but for him its kind of poetic. He was always the guy that was a huge douche, on all the sports teams, really popular, a shithead to girls, made fun of everybody, thought he was better than everyone else, etc. I honestly hope it knocks him down a few pegs. I dont have him on facebook, but I can still see his profile pictures. In all of them he is either wearing a hat, or its an older picture when he had hair. It seems like being a hat prisoner is much more common than I thought.

Going back to my uncle though, him being a hat prisoner is weird for me. I always thought of him as being such a confident guy, and until the last few years I would have never thought balding bothered people that were 30+. I even joked around with one of my teachers about it, something I kind of feel bad for. I never would of thought grown adults cared about something so petty. I just thought it was a natural part of getting older and no big deal. I almost still look at it that way, if I could keep my hair and lose it in my 30s I would be thrilled. I just want to have hair though my 20s. I mean, its not like many 30 yo's are scoring with 18-25 yr olds anyways.

Out of my close group of friends. I have quite a hairy bunch of pals. There are about 10 of us who are still close. We are all 28/29 now. 6 of them are all NW1s with 5 of them having perfect and thick hair. The other dude is a NW1.5 and his hair is quite fine, but it's been like that for a while.

Myself and another friend are NW3. He keeps his short while I 'try' to style mine. Another guy is a NW1 but is thinning all over and has a baldspot at the back and the other guy is a NW4 with diffuse thinning, but his hair is strawberry-blonde/red which I feel looks better compared to my dark thinning dome.

My brother who's 32, has 3 kids, runs a business. You would think from that stressed and balding but no, he has a NW1.

Old man is a NW4/5. His hair is pretty thick though and no diffuse thinning unlike me.

I am a NW3.

Ok I have one, I have actually posted this on here before.
Used to work with this guy who I would decribe as 'bohemian' he had shoulder length hair, tribal Tattoos was into music, smoked weed played guitar was into art and drawing went to music festivals .... the whole 'lifestyle'.
Anyway he was a really popular guy, very outgoing and sociable.

He worked with us from the age of about 23 - 27 then he left to work as an landscaper.
A few years later we went out for our works Xmas evening meal and some of the women from work contacted him to invite him along.
So we were in a pub and he walks in totally unrecognisable the shoulder length hair is gone and he's fully sly!
Everyone is like WTF! and he just mumbled something about "yeah I'm losing it these days". But it was'nt just the hair that had gone he had turned into a quiet introvert and looked highly uncomfortable constantly looking at the floor and rubbing his head. He only stayed about an hour and then left, that was the last we ever saw of him.

All my close friends are actually worse of, or in just as a bad situation as I am in actually... We're all in our early 20s, though one of my friends is in his mid 20s. The older guy actually shaved it for a long time, and looked good doing so. He recently grew his hair back, and he's about a NW3 just as I am (though, he's probably not on treatment, very self concious though, but also self confident). Other guy my age buzzes his hair, he's got a good hairline still, but is diffusing pretty badly, and self consious about it, though it's not letting him down in any way even though he's vain as f***.

Same with another guy I know, he was always a NW2, but recently he seems to be thinner on top (funny, cause he was the first one who mocked me for my hairline). Know a couple of other NW2s at my age to, but imo NW2 is perfectly fine (in retrospect, am a NW3).

Shame to say that I guess it all affected their personalities (somewhat). And yes, I'm being observed a lot by them.

I myself wear my hair long still, but am sort of a hat prisoner also. The beanie actually looks good on me I guess. So I pretty much wear it all the time.

Being a Norwood-spotter is no fun really... But being Norwood-spotted is worse.

And s.a.f.: that guy could pretty well be me in the future...

yea i know what you mean. I saw on my college campus some guy who couldn't have been beyond 25 with a full on nw6.

no hat, in broad full daylight.

that guy must have like mega confidence or something, i couldn't do that.

i'm currently hat prisoner

I have seen other young men on my campus with really severe male pattern baldness. It is sad and I feel bad and lucky at the same time. It does just make me think about my own hair imperfections though. I can't tell you how happy I would be if I had a Norwood 1.
