After reading discussions on our subject male pattern baldness.. I’ve come to a proposal as to how scalp hair grows & doesn’t grow & how to make sense of it. Also why we are looking in the wrong mechanisms as to the WHY.
First: We know before puberty hair growth is not problem in males or females. Let us all accept that as true.. No need for exceptions I am talking 99.9%.
About early teens humans are flooded with hormones.. Females hair already healthy & long gets even more healthy & long. Males hair is a bit coarser & is healthy & full..In late teens females are growing hair rapidly & hair styling is the topic-(what to do with all this hair) Males don’t really care that much but then there is notice if hairs falling out ( some in clumps) & idea is planted (Am I losing my mane) already & I’m not even out of the house yet?
At 20 & beyond some males are noticeably balding while females are not.
As time goes on both sexes will report hairloss but from vastly different perspectives.
As we age hairloss/hair issues become more of a problem.
So we know the difference in hormones..
Finasteride/Duasteride & their cousins help males
Minoxidil helps both
Spirolactone helps both
Minoxidil & Spirolactone both operate along Potassium channels. Minoxidil is a vasodilator- increasing blood flow through vessels.
Potassium is a mineral usually measuring low or very low in both sexes.
Women as they age have a tendency towards osteoporosis-bone weakness
Women overall tend to live longer than males.
Estrogen is also a vasodilator. It protects bones in women. Estrogen lowers calcification & arteriosclerosis.
Testosterone/high cholesterol triggers calcification..
What we have in general..
Women’s estrogen is inhibiting calcification, acting as a vasodilator.
The general premise of proper blood flow to the scalp is necessary for proper hair growth. . Osteoporoses is decalcification or demineralization of bones. Calcification is the regulation of calcium salts. Too much results in excess minerization.
Decalcification results in depleted mineralization.
So what we have is a balance..
The hormones naturally occurring in our bodies effect more than hair but overall health.. The ratio of minerals do also.
And so & so on..
But let’s stick to male pattern baldness..
Vasodilation is a plus to hair growth.. & overall health in general.. Nitric acid is a vasodilator.
Generally, estrogen tends to have MORE prominent vasodilatory effects, particularly in smaller blood vessels than testosterone.
Estrogen has been shown to have some protective effects against vascular calcification, . Estrogen may help maintain the balance of calcium and phosphate in the blood vessels, reducing the risk of calcification.
So in summary..
Because of our biological differences..
hair growth generally shows a vastly different trajectory.
One thing leads to another..
Two males with identical hormone levels—One full head hair other balding.
But in women usually identical hormone levels Both full head of hair.
So why is the male balding?
Genetics is a non-answer because everything is genetics.
For some reason the balding man is IMO out of balance for proper hair growth.
His hairs are being cut off from proper blood flow, calcification of scalp is excessive, his follicles are not protected from anti-growth factors, the dilation of small vessels is sub par.. So if he does nothing the hairloss will continue unabated.
In conclusion there are a myriad of ratios/relationships going on in our complex bodies. I believe the balding males hairs can regrow.. but it will take more simple solutions.. I haven’t mentioned inflammation.. though it is a symptom of male balding. Microneedling helps not only by promoting growth factors but by breaking up some of the calcification undercl the scalp..
The goal is to get the hair follicle dormant, half growing or bursting with life to be in the best possible environment for growth.
