Blood in semen on finasteride... I'm spooked

I started generic finasteride (Finpecia) exactly 7 weeks ago, 1mg ED. I had testicle pain on day 2 that lasted 24 hours or so and disappeared completely. No other side effects of any sort, nothing changed with libido etc.

Almost 2 weeks ago, the testicle pain returned, but milder. It's annoying but tolerable, especially as I read here it's quite common and seems to go away.

About 5 days ago I noticed my semen had changed consistency. There was less and it was slightly gelatinous in parts. I've never had this before as far as I know. I also though it was slightly pink but assumed I was imagining it.

It's now (as of 2 or 3 days or so) tinted red/brown. It's not dramatic, but there's no mistaking that it's blood, and there's no mistaking the colour.

I'm spooked. so much for no side effects. Has anyone had anything similar? Apart from seeing the Dr (I think I will go tomorrow) What do people suggest? Tonight I only took 0.5mg. I was worried not taking the finasteride at all, 'cold turkey' may cause some other side effect.

oh yeah, When I started taking it I buzzed my hair to a 3mm. after 7 weeks I can see some hairs in the crown and some along the front (not the temples, but the widows peak) seem to have darkened.. which made me think it was working. I really don't want to have to stop it and really wanted to be able to take this stuff, but blood in semen is freaky.

The presence of blood in the semen may be undetectable (it only can be seen microscopically) or visible in the fluid. Its cause could be the result of inflammation, infection, blockage, or injury of the male reproductive tract or a problem within the urethra, testicles, epididymis and prostate.

Further semen analysis and other urogenital system tests might be needed to find out the cause of blood in the semen.

This sounds like a serious infection or testicular cancer. You should get this checked right away...

doubt it's the finasteride, get it checked out asap. doubt it's anything serious like cancer either so don't get too spooked. Let us know.

I've had that problem maybe 8-10 months ago, I did a bunch of tests and right away they gave me antibiotics in case it was an infection...turned out everything was ok as in 95% of the cases.

Yes I never posted the outcome. The blood disappeared completely the very next time, but I checked it out anyway and apparently it is usually completely harmless, just very alarming, when it's a one-off thing. Apparently any testicular cancer or infection symptoms do not appear spontaneously and then disappear equally spontaneously.

I was clear of any signs of infections, so that wasn't the cause. Apparently it's usually due to inflamation. How and if the inflammation was from finasteride I do not know. I decided to stop finasteride completely for just over a week though and the testicle pain subsided. I restarted finasteride at 0.25mg/day and am going to stay there for a few months. No pain so far at all. It's now 3 months I think and I am still seeing increased pigmentation in hairs around the hairline and crown. I have diffuse thinning at the front/top/crown, no real receding and am 37.

Hoepfully this is helpful for anyone else who experiences a one off episode of blood in their semen. A good thing though, it made me a lot less concenrned about my hair when I thought I may have has something seriously wrong. I've kind of stopped thinking about the hair situation!
