Hi
I'm 19 years old, almost 20, and am increasingly worried I might be losing my hair. I've always had thin hair and though I haven't noticed it getting particularly thinner yet, my hairline appears to be receding a little in the front (so small it probably wouldn't be noticeable to anyone but me). male pattern baldness runs in my Dad's side of the family (him and all three of his brothers are bald or balding) but not on my Mom's. For the past month or so I've been noticing a few hairs come out when I brush my hand through my hair, maybe and average of 5 a day. Is this something I should be concerned about or am I just paranoid? What course of action should I take if any?

I'd appreciate any advice.

Thank You

Welcome to the forums. *Most* guys see some pretty noticeable shedding when hair loss finally kicks in. They also experience some pretty noticeable and absolutely infuriating itching, inflammation, and tingling in the scalp around or before the same time. This is not to imply that everyone does, but these are some of the most common tell tale signs.

The best thing you can do right now is start a 6 to 12 month self evaluation. Get a digital camera and take a good 10-15 photos of your hair in VERY good lighting with VERY good focus. Take pics from every angle, both wet and dry, messy and styled the way you like it. Keep them and monitor yourself over the next 12 months. If at 12 months you look the same, you'll know it was in your head. The mind can play tricks on you from hour to hour and mirror to mirror when it comes to hair loss.

Know that nothing that happens in a 12 month period is irreversible, and kick back and keep a casually watchful eye on yourself for now. Id say I speak for all of us here when I say: "When you start losing your hair, YOU KNOW IT".
