Hi Bryan, i re-tried dutasteride again for the past 3 weeks, and i want to switch back over to taking 1mg Propecia every 3rd day. I know Dutasteride has a long halflife, and i even read that people taking dutasteride had reduced DHT for 1 year after stopping it. I want to re-start finasteride, but i want all Dutasteride to be cleared from my body. Do i have to wait any specific amount of time before i start taking propecia? Will the dutasteride clear from my system while taking propecia and after a few weeks will my DHT levels be the same levels as if i never took dutasteride at all, and just took finasteride?

Also, whats the difference in DHT reduction between 0.25, 0.5, and 1mg, of propecia over the coarse of a few days? Basically taking every 3 days.

Thanks Bryan!

I'd have to look it up but I think finasteride and dutasteride are broken down by different enzymes, so taking finasteride should not slow dutasteride elimination. even if they compete for the same enzyme, elimation would just be slowed, stopped. Unless you are getting side effects from dutasteride, I think you should just switch them immediately. If you are getting side effects, it is probably because systemic DHT levels are too low for your body, at least in one organ. In that case, just wait for the side effects to go away, and your hair should be protected the whole time. Then get on finasteride once the sides are gone, since that means the DHT levels have climbed.

I don't know about 0.25 and 0.5mg, but I've seen some grafts of smaller and higher doses, and they are pretty close. Anything that is at least 0.05mg/day should work, and Bryan says 20-30mg/day is probably the highest safe dose to stay on for several years. The DHT inhibition of each is pretty similar, though higher doses do inhibit about 5 or 10% more.

0.2mg/day regrows 82% as much as hair as 1mg/day, which regrows 83% as much as 5mg/day. This is because different follicles make different amounts of DHT and have different sensitivities. Some may be sensitive to any DHT, while others can handle a lot. They are on a distribution, and the amount of DHT you inhibit determines which ones will keep shrinking and which ones may grow back.

Why are you switching back?
