Can I apply minoxidil to a small area?

I'm sure the question has been asked before, but with so many pages, I can't find the answer!

I want to apply minoxidil it to my upper temporal region where there is fuzzy hair left to see how it will work. I would like to know if aplying it to just a small region will somehow put at risk my entire head of hair to the dependency and probable initial shedding often associated?

I still have quite a thick head of hair and do not want to start minoxidil on my entire head yet. Thoughts?

I have asked my derm that same question and he told me that no matter where you apply minoxidil it it goes into your blood stream and can effect hair on your head not just wear you apply it. But it will do the most wear applyed.
