Hi all,
I am planning on asking my dermatologist to prescribe a higher powered minoxidil than whats avaliable OTC. But before i make my appointment i need help from some knowledgeable members.
I remember reading in another post that minoxidil doesn't work on everyone because certain people lack an enzyme. Somebody somewhere had mentioned that if you combine another ingredient with the minoxidil it eliminates that problem. I believe it was retinol, i think...

Can anybody confirm that that is true and that retinol would be beneficial in a minoxidil solution? Also if anyone can point me to where I would find any research documentation on the retinol/minoxidil mixture that would be very helpful in convincing my doctor to prescribe this. Of course I'll report back the forum my results or lack thereof. Thanks

Just remember that 10 % minoxidil doesn’t mean double the results of 5%. 10 % might only provide marginally better results than 5% but with much more pronounced side effects.

Usually the higher concentrations of minoxidil usually produce more side effects and very little to no additional benefit to 5%. That being said, I was considering increasing the dosage of minoxidil so please report back if you have success with this. Hope it works for you.

This is what you are looking for, already posted ( by me :) ) :
Tretinoin enhances minoxidil response in androgenetic alopecia patients by upregulating follicular sulfotransferase enzymes.

Minoxidil sulphate is what stimulates hair growth. The Minoxidil you buy at CVS is not minoxidil sulphate. Upjohn hopes you have an enzyme in your scalp which does the conversion. They don’t advertise that. There is a test for the enzyme, but very few get it. So maybe 40% of users get results. I purchased a kilo of minoxidil sulphate. But it didn’t do anything extraordinary. Doesn’t hurt also. I also have tretinoin. Again not much in results. It’s a first step, but not last one.

Minoxidil sulphate is not stable, so a lotion of it will not work.
