Hello,

Seeing how the women's forum is extremely "inactive" I'm hoping to get some answers here. Do you know of any woman who's taking Finasteride with success in curtailing hereditary hair loss?

Yes, my hair loss is confirmed hereditary and also it exhibits in all the females and males (and even in children) of my extended family. The pattern is very distinct and in identical place (upper left vertex) in everyone even as a child. The only difference, as a child, it's very, very small cowlick, resembling a short traction line in the upper left vertex/crown area and gets larger and with more diffused thinning as one gets older.

My Current Treatment:
5% minoxidil solution since 9/19/12 twice a day
1% Nizo since 9/19/12 every 2-3 days
1.25mg finasteride since 10/5/12 every day

I've known to have extremely thick hair all my life until the past year or so. On my Dad's side -- everyone still has extremely thick hair even into the 80s. It's my Mom's side that has this inherent pattern of "baldness/thinning". Also, I've never been on any px medications (not birth control pills, no antibiotics, no px medication ever throughout my ENTIRE life) until starting finasteride on 10/5/12.

About a year ago, I just noticed a gradual decrease in hair volume, nothing alarming, but just enough to make me leery that perhaps, this marks the START of my inevitable, hereditary hair loss. Last month, I went to get all the blood work done and everything seems normal and my GP said it could very well be genetic. I discussed this problem w/ my family members who suffered the same problem, and apparently no one really cared. Only one of my family members decided to do something about it and his hair looks great compared to the rest of people in my family. He told me that he's been taking finasteride, minoxidil and nizo since mid 20s (he's nearing 50 now w/ full head of hair). I'm in my mid 30s and starting to lose a bit more hair. I copied his regimen (the big 3) even though I know finasteride is not rec'd for women. I'm not planning on getting pregnant ever. Still, I feel a bit uncomfortable taking it due to the fact that I've never taking any px drug in my life. I don't even take Tylenol, Aspirin, etc.

At the start of treatment about a month ago (minoxidil 5%), shedding virtually stopped for the first 2.5 weeks . Then it's been shedding steadily after 2.5 weeks and still do... I'm not sure if the shedding is from finasteride or minoxidil (since I started finasteride exactly 2 weeks ago). I have really long hair so when it sheds, I notice. The shedding hasn't quite stopped and feels a bit scary. I've NEVER EVER lost this much hair before until the past 2 weeks. I understand that shedding is to be expected, but it's still scary. Some days, I have no to very little shedding, and some days, a lot. I haven't noticed any hair growth elsewhere even though I use 5% (and yes, I inspect my face and body carefully every few days. The minute it happens, I will go down to 2% minoxidil). The only side I have experienced while on this regimen is the shedding and a bit drier hair due to Nizo (but extra conditioner fixes that).

My questions are:
1) Do you know of any woman taking Finasteride? Did they have any success? Did it change their body or affect their health in anyway?
2) Should I stop taking Finasteride (only 2 weeks in) and just stick w/ minoxidil and Nizo for now and ride out the sheds? Is it too late to stop taking finasteride after having taken it for 2 weeks now?
3) I don't want to take any birth control pills, etc....they seem scarier to me than finasteride for some reason? I have known women in my family taking these birth control pills and hormones injections and both messed them up. What's my alternative for female hereditary hair loss??? I can take Adovart, but it's not extensively studied and quite expensive as well.

Thank you in advance for your help. Have a good day!

Unfortunately, there isn’t much evidence that finasteride works for women. I haven’t seen anything yet about finasteride being negative for women (apart from birth defects), so I don’t see why you should stop.

topical minoxidil is the only proven drug for female Androgenetic Alopecia.

Personally, I wouldn’t just accept minoxidil as the only treatment. I guess with women, the treatment of alopecia involves a bit of trying different things. Like maybe you have other things connected to your alopecia like allergies or fungi infections or maybe your immune system react badly to stress. Maybe u need more magnesium than the average person and your normal levels cause muscle tightening of your glea or some sh*t like that.

I did a quick search on “Google Scholarâ€; I’m not sure if you have used that before. If there is an article here u want in full I might be able to get it through my school.

“Measuring Reversal of Hair Miniaturization in Androgenetic Alopecia by Follicular Counts in Horizontal Sections of Serial Scalp Biopsies: Results of Finasteride 1 mg Treatment of Men and Postmenopausal Womenâ€
conclusion:
In the female study, no significant differences in follicular counts in horizontal sections provide an informative adjunct to noninvative measures used in hair growth studies. Finasteride apears to be capable of reversing hair miniaturization in androgenetic alopecia in young to middle-aged men, but not in postmenopausal women.

“Finasteride Treatment of Female Pattern Hair Lossâ€
Conclusions:
Sixty-two percent of the patients demonstrated some improvement of their hair loss with the use of finasteride, 2.5 mg/d, while taking the oral contraceptive. It is unclear whether the success was due to a higher dosage of finasteride (2.5 mg instead of 1 mg) or to its association with the oral contraceptive containing drospirenone, which has an antiandrogenic effect. Further studies are necessary to understand which patterns of female pattern hair loss respond better to this treatment.

“Lack of efficacy of finasteride in postmenopausal women with androgenetic alopeciaâ€
Conclusion:
In postmenopausal women with Androgenetic Alopecia, finasteride 1 mg/day taken for 12 months did not increase hair growth or slow the progression of hair thinning

“Treatment of hyper androgenic alopecia in womenâ€
Conclusion:
Flutamide at a dose of 250 mg daily induced a modest improvement in alopecia after 1 year, whereas cyproterone acetate and finasteride were not effective. Treatment for more than 1 year may be required for better results

“Quantitative assessment of spironolactone treatment in women with diffuse androgen-dependent alopeciaâ€
Conclusion:
spironolactone stopped the progression of alopecia but no growth occured

Women must not become pregnant while taking finasteride (blocking the 5AR enzyme prevents normal genitalia development... leading to deformity with absent or micropenis). Women taking while potentially fertile MUST use an effective form of birth control.

http://dpic.org/article/professional/finasteride-hair-loss-women ".... The role of finasteride in female pattern hair loss is still controversial, with reports of success and occasionally failure continuing to appear. Some women with female pattern hair loss might benefit from finasteride, although better understanding of the condition and more research into optimal finasteride dosing and who might be good candidates for treatment is needed.[SUP]17,25[/SUP] Doses used have ranged from 5 mg per week to 5 mg per day, over periods of 6 months to more than 2 years. Finasteride was well tolerated in the various doses used with few treatment-related adverse effects reported. The main caution is that finasteride can cause feminization of male fetuses, so pregnancy must be excluded before beginning finasteride and women of reproductive age must use effective birth control while taking finasteride."

Minoxidil is the most proven treatment for women. Finasteride is controversial, but may or may not help some, with or without the addition of some types of BCP.

It is not too late to stop finasteride if you choose to (with a short half life of 8 hours it will be gone fairly quickly)

An experienced dermatologist could help make sure you have done everything to rule out identifiable causes of hairloss (if GP missed anything), comment of whether they suspect an androgen component, and let you know what they have had best results with...

Wish you luck in finding a treatment

Thank you all. I will get more lab works done and look for hair specialist/dermatologist. Perhaps, I even need to take a biopsy? Yikes!

I will stop taking finasteride and just stick w/ Rogaine for now. I carefully examined my hair scalp today, section by section, and saw a ton of growth sprouting everywhere. These were about 2-5 inches hair, so I don't think they're from Rogaine treatment. I also noticed some 1 mm hair, which may be from Rogaine. However, the shedding I have from week 2.5th up until now (week 4th) has been quite scary. I don't know what to do ... ride it out or cut my loss and stop Rogaine altogether???? Argh...

Does anyone know if Rogaine will ONLY target the Androgenetic Alopecia follicles or will they affect EVERY hair follicle (healthy or otherwise)? By the way, all the hair I've been shedding are very long hair (12-20 inches in length). I haven't changed a thing (not really) in the past year. I'm healthy, athletic, stress free, and in shape. I can certainly eat better, but I don't think that's the "sudden cause" as I've been eating pretty much same all my life.

Don't know what to do. Went to GP and he could seem "careless". Said that I don't have any problem, but I would know my own hair -- it still looks fairly thick overall, except for that one thin genetic cowlick/traction line, which I can easily cover. However, my shedding has been quite heavy in the past year and my hair has become thinner for sure, but still looks thick enough that my Doctor can easily dismiss it as "hair loss".

the best advice i can give you is- stay on minoxidil and finasteride forever and forget about the shedding. there is a new study done on women, that is not published yet- showing success with 5mg of finasteride. seems that women need the higher dose.

i am a woman and i wish somebody had given me that advice ten years ago. sorry in a rush- just didn't want to to make a bad move...

y not take spironolactone? it does increase your estrogen BUT you can consume wheat bran (not oat but WHEAT bran) either in a cereal form (look on bk of box for ingredients) or 7 tsp of the pure wheat bran (find at some gro stores) in water. I do the pure stuff and it keeps my estrogen from going up from the spironolactone. Also exercise with metabolise some of the excess estrogen. But its safer than the fut med your are talking about. Also rogain alone wont do it, you MUST use nizoral/ketoconazole 2% shampoo and leave it on your hair for at least 10 mins, do it 2-3 times a week. its the only thing that kills the dht at the scalp level. well not only but whats accessible easily.
