We already knew that it can decrease the risk of prostate cancer while also increasing the chance that if you do get prostate cancer, it will be a more aggressive type.

Maybe it's just me but I'd rather have a much smaller chance of getting it in the first place.

Finasteride lowers your overall risk of cancer period. It is currently being studied as a "vaccine" against prostate cancer. I don't know if this helps but here it is:

The public health implications of the PCPT, and in particular, whether finasteride increases the risk of high-grade prostate cancer continue to be intensely debated. A follow-up analysis of the data from the PCPT using a statistical model to estimate the number of person-years saved as a result of preventing the development of prostate cancer concluded that the benefits of finasteride outweighed its risks [31]. The 25 percent reduction in the risk of developing prostate cancer in American men over the age of 55 translated into 316,760 person-years being saved over a five-year period. Even if there was a 6.9 percent absolute increase in the proportion of men with high-grade tumors (corresponding to the difference between the rates in the placebo and finasteride arms of the PCPT), the number of person-lives saved would be reduced only a small amount, to 262,567. However, others have come to opposite conclusions [32].
