"catastrophic" Prolonged Shed, But Improving At The Same Time?

Hello,

So here's the deal. I am NW2, been on Avodart 0,5mg/every other day and 2000mg of MSM from November to May, and ramped it up hitting 6000mg in the beginning of July. My hair is almost shoulder length. I've been shedding like a massacre since the end of May, and so far, it has not slowed down. However...

Around June my hair was in worse shape that it had been for a very long while. I don't know if it was due to MSM, or just Avodart doing its job, but between November and May, I shed very little hair, and save for the receded hairline, I was actually feeling pretty good about it. By the end of the month I started shedding and I honestly thought I was screwed.

Right now, I am still shedding a lot. No idea how many hairs a day exactly, but if I do my typical "stress test" (head down, and gently massage the scalp for 3 minutes), I will get around 30-40 hairs on the ground, and if I reach back and gently tug at it, more likely than not my hand will come back with one or two hairs in it. The shed hairs are all over the length range, from just over a centimeter, to fully grown 20+cm hairs.

However, it still feels like it's improving. My hairline keeps slowly filling in, and if I decide to do a blowout, which I do occasionally, I will be positively surprised every time, even though, obviously, my hairline still bugs me like hell. I will be doing a FUE transplant to fix that, probably around January or so, but I'd like to see how far it goes on treatment alone, even though it's discouraging to see it shedding like this.

I have -no idea- how my hair still looks half-decent after 3 months shedding like this, and honestly I have no idea what is going on. If I wasn't losing short hairs too I wouldn't worry so much, but the fact that very tiny hairs are falling out bothers me. What do you think? Short cycling? Something else?

Thanks.

EDIT: Also, I have no proof to back this up, but MSM seemed to have a very positive effect on my hairline, even though I am taking it in hopes that it will make cycles run longer. It might all just be Avodart though.

And one more question, when a hair enters telogen phase, can it come out of the scalp immediately, or a few days after? Or will it always stay on for a couple of months?

Yes and yes. I tried propecia for 2 or 3 months, but the itching didn't go away and I felt like it was doing nothing and promptly switched to Avodart. No sides, except for very slight gynecomastia, but even though I never progressed beyond NW2, it did fill in some and started looking denser. As I've said, since I started taking MSM my temples improved even further, but I am not sure if that is due to MSM itself, or just Avodart's effects over time.

Yes, but I am lean and fairly muscular so it has no significant effect. However, I am not a case study and you should not be guiding yourself by my experience with it. If you want your hairline back, turn to FUE or something similar, don't put your faith on antiandrogens for that. I take avodart to keep my body clear of DHT, not in hopes that my hairline will just magically come back.

Not really qualified to answer that question. And as far as I know, 23 is not too young for FUE. I am 24 and I will be getting mine in January.
