western people have a thing for sharing on social media things they are proud of. could be kids, food they cooked, a place they got to travel to, big muscles, and sometimes hair. i saw a post recently of a girl's glossy, thick hair flowing into her back accompanied by the caption "my hair is getting so long!"

this cannot be interpreted as anything but a "f*** you" to hair loss sufferers. "look at this thing that nature gave me and didn't give you! haha!"

congratulations of having an exponentially easier life than many of us, because of some filaments on your head that you have no control over. i'm going to start posting some pics of my hand holding my bank statement. "my skin is just as white as the day i was born, and i have college degrees and money! loving life! all you poor losers living in poverty, bet you wish you had the privileges i have!"

i think the aspect of narcissism that makes me throw up the most is acting proud about something you have no control over. it's the same thing that makes nationalistic attitudes and patriotism such childish concepts.

Ya I don't think it's a taunt against baldness, but showing off a good head of hair to other woman.

No doubt social media, especially facebook, is turned into a personal public relations space where people advertise to each other
how wonderful they are.

Heh at thinking normal people would be so conscious of hair loss sufferers

You wish we were relevant enough!

bald people are not invisible (at least not literally) the way an ant is to an elephant. normal people see baldness all the time, and CHOOSE not to give a f***.

i suppose it's because you can't fathom the impact hair has on your life. you look in the mirror and marvel at how pretty it is, but never do you imagine that it's one of the protagonists in the opera of your life, determining tons of sh*t from your mood to your applicant pool of dating partners to job prospects to how people treat you.

a little empathy offsets ignorance.

Well exactly, and as tough as this is to admit, there's a good chance we'd all be the same as full heads.

Uncomfortable truths.

She's not intentionally dissing hair loss suffering, it's not part of her world.

If she posted a picture of her glowing make up free skin after a spa day, would you jump to the conclusion she's making fun of those with adult acne? No, because (presumably) this doesn't affect you, and would not be in the forefront of your mind.

@PappinAce

This might surprise you, Western woman have, on average seven sexual partners in their life time.

In Europe, the average is six.

So, there's really not a "sl*t factor" to the Western part of the world. That's just a myth!

(There was a thread about that on here, it's a myth).

it's good to look at it from that perspective. the hair girl's post was most certainly a diss to me, even if unintended, just like the spa selfie in your example would be a diss to someone battling acne.

my philosophy is, if it has the potential to hurt someone, keep it to yourself. narcissistic attitudes are toxic. save the selfies for your partners, don't make it public.

no doubt that this is pervading europe as well. by "west" i was thinking west of asia in general. but i know that narcissism can be a universal human problem.

Just lol. A couple of girls I know had a conversation about hair cuts and how the hairdresser cut her hair 2cm too short and she started tearing up... Right in front of me, while they knew I was balding.

when they are old and hideous they will cry themselves to death. not our problem :D

Old Russian Proverb: ''You'd be like me too if you were me'' - NW6 Russian man living in the 1940s

Yet that didn't stop NW0 God Joseph Stalin from slaughtering the poor bloke in the town square.

It is a strange thing, how pretty much the biggest compliment/insult you can give a person is in relation to their looks, when it has nothing to do with any part of their character or anything they've accomplished

Lol at social media. I don't know what's more pathetic... the attention seeking w****s or the scores of deadbeat guys waiting in line to give them a like in the hopes of a lay. They swallow the bait like fish from a barrel but fish is never on the menu.

The biggest compliments I received were not about how I look... But they also were from people who bothered to get to know me.
We are more than our look.
We are more than our looks, but our looks is a lot. Beautiful people are usually so used to compliments on their looks that they appreciate other kinds of compliments more, maybe?
If you never get compliments on your looks and finally get one, I think it would matter a lot to that person.

It's funny - when I was 16-25ish I got so many compliments on my looks, and so much attention for them, that I told myself that it gets old and I don't need that sort of validation anymore because I always had so much of it. And it's true that I do appreciate compliments on my intelligence and/or character more than looks-based compliments, because I feel that those qualities define me more as a person. Yet now, at age 39, I've again started feeling somewhat of a need for validation of my looks/physical attractiveness. I chalk it up to a mini mid-life crisis lol. :p

Probably, and yes, it's important. It's always enjoyable to get compliments on your look. But would not you say that compliments on your personality, your intelligence, your humor, stays with you longer?

If you feel this way then it's a sign you have good character
