Chevyman95's story

I've always had a high hairline since I was a kid but over the past 5 years it just keeps getting worse and worse. My family is all bald except for my cousins and noone was as bad as mine at my age. I have been reading the forum for a couple weeks now and am trying to figure out what would be best for me to do. I would really like to avoid internal stuff but I am getting tired of losing my hair so I might do it anyway.

The other aggravating thing is I can't grow a beard to save my life. I have to shave every 4-5 days and I can't grow sideburns, moustache, beard, anything. I have decent hair but not enough to add up to anything. Don't know if that matters but it bothers me

What do you guys think?

Hi bud, welcome to the site. You are definitely balding and it's very aggressive.

You NEED to talk to a doctor about getting on finasteride(Propecia/Proscar) ASAP. Ask your Doctor to write you a script for Proscar because it is the 5 mg form of finasteride, while Propecia is 1 mg. But Proscar tablets only cost twice as much as Propecia tablets so you can save money by cutting your Proscar tablets into fourths or fifths with a pillcutter and taking either 1.25 mg or 1 mg of finasteride a day. Doesn't really make much difference.

I also recommend going to your local supermarket and buying Nizoral shampoo with ketoconazole. Use this shampoo every 3 days and leave it in your hair for 5 minutes. Follow up with a good conditioner.

I also recommend adding minoxidil(Rogaine) to your regimen because I don't think that finasteride will be able to grow all of that back for you. You can hold off on the minoxidil if you like but definitely talk to your doctor about getting on finasteride(Proscar) as soon as possible. It's much easier to maintain hair than it is to regrow it and Proscar should hold your hair in place for a few years.

Minoxidil(Rogaine) is more of a growth stimulant than a maintainer so it is best combined with the Proscar rather than used alone.

If you are interested in using the minoxidil now because you want your hair back now and don't want to wait to see what Proscar will do for you, then you have a couple options. You can buy the brand name 5% extra strength Rogaine liquid that is available in like any pharmacy or supermarket. Or you can buy the generic Rogaine from a store like Sams Club or Wal-Mart or CostCo which is just as good. OR, and what I think is a better option if you're interested in adding minoxidil, try the new Rogaine Foam. It's cheap when you buy at a place like Sams Club or Wal-Mart and it dries much faster and is less irritating than the liquid version because it contains no propylene gylcol.

So to sum up, here's what I think you need:

And don't forget to take pictures at least every 3 months so you can accurately assess your progress. And don't be scared if the minoxidil(Rogaine) or finasteride(Proscar) makes you start to shed. It's perfectly normal and you should continue with the treatment so the hair can come back in thicker and fuller.

Good luck to you.

Jayman did an awesome job of helping you out.
Like he said, that minoxidil will give you that extra boost to start regrowing. I'd recommend not waiting on that, unless you are content with where your hair is now. Finasteride really does work. I am going to get back on it myself in a couple months.

skip finasteride and go straight for dutasteride. Forget thinking you want to "skip internal stuff," you really don't have an option.

Don't get offended by what I am about to say, but I think that a shaved haircut while you take your meds will fit you fine. Go for the vin disael look.

You HAVE GOT to stop telling people this sh*t, like finasteride is not an effective treatment. He will do just fine with the big3.

Thanks guys I appreciate it.

I probably will end up shaving my head while I start on everything then let it grow back out later.

I've heard some horror stories about propecia which is why I kind of wanted to avoid it being only 20 and everything but I think I am going to give it a try anyways

I would not shave your head, but that's just me.

dutasteride can't be acquired as prescription for male pattern baldness.

+1 to what Jayman said, but I'd also suggest getting L'Oreal Vive thin/thick shampoo.

While you are waiting for hair to regrow, you can at least make your current hair look better.

Well, as others have already told you have very agressive hairloss for a 20 year old. I think you already need the big guns and should start with Dutasteride instead of Finasteride. You need a lot of regrowth and this can be better achieved with the combo of Dutasteride, Rogaine Foam and Nizoral shampoo. Good Luck, mate and don´t forget to post your update pictures!
