They also talk about Finasteride. It doesn't look good.

"Our findings indicate that chronic androgen deficiency is associated with meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye"

Very interesting read....thanks bcapop. To add to this body of evidence I actually had a minor blocked meibomian gland (basically just the pores on/above your eyelid) which resulted in a small raised bump form about 6 months after initially starting Propecia...something I never had before. That was 3 years ago and I never did anything about it as it just stayed small... and fairly unnoticable. I finally had it removed by a dermatologist a few weeks ago because I was sick of it just hanging out there. Also had to treat a bit of Seb Derm on the same eyelid which formed later on about a year ago. Could be simply coincidence but the evidence in the experiment looks rather compelling...not a lot of ambeguity in the results. Never had a problem until I started anti-androgens. Again thanks...perhaps more side effects one should at least consider...

No problem. I haven't read the whole article yet, but I wonder why this didn't come up on the Finasteride trials. Maybe the incidence of this was relative insignificant. But it's interesting :)

This has been talked about before, apparently estrogen reduces tear production, and test. raises it. finasteride, long term raises estrogen, so people due have issues. I take DIM and leave it at that,

Been on finasteride for 11 years. No eye problems whatsoever.

Ever notice how many "newbies" come into these forums with warning posts about the dangers of finasteride?

Proscar (five milligrams of finasteride or five times the propecia dosage of finasteride of one milligram) has been used for over 20 years now. Some men have been on it healthily and happily for that length of time.

Yes, the thing that scares me with this site, is like all internet, everybody can say anything with no scientific proof...
Can't we sterile-impotent-fat-bald-and-double-dcup-men just live in the hope that we will survive

I wish grad school was like this....I hate all the references to Bourdieu all the time

I am definately no newbie Michael and you should read better. You can't see every study along the way and I think it's better to dig up some older studies because our understanding of baldness only increases.

Yeah this has been posted previously in the side effects forum.

The NHS clinical knowledge summary database suggests that androgens promote the secretory activity of the meibomian glands. This might help to explain why dry eyes occur more frequently in women than men and particularly effect post-menopausal women.

You can see the logic that finasteride reduces the exposure of the meibonian gland to androgens, and could consequently be associated with dry eyes. However, this study had a very small sample with only four research subjects taking finasteride. And it appears to be the only published study of its kind.

It's also worth remembering that there are other causes for dry eyes. I got the condition years ago (well before I needed Propecia) after having LASIK.
