Combining A Concealer And Hair Transplant

Hi everyone,

Long story short, been balding for maybe 3.5 years, probably a Norwood 3 (but the type with thinning at the crown, my hairline is pretty much still intact), I think I will respond pretty well to finasteride + min (I previously took Min for about a year and I think I actually had some modest regrowth)

Anyways, I am 23. I just tried a concealer for the first time (read: an hour ago) which I am super happy with. I was just wondering if down the line the need arose for a hair transplant (because concealer became ineffective due to more hair loss) I could combine these two and get some pretty decent results. ex...getting maybe 2k grafts where I need them and then using concealer to cover the rest. So, even if I was pretty bald, when it was all said and done I could pull off a decent (though modest) look.

It seems like I could conceptually, but I was wondering if anyone here knows anyone who has done it.

Also what are some of the complications with using something like toppik? ex. when is it good to avoid? do you guys use min with it?

I've had multiple transplant procedures and use a toppik type product everyday to make it fuller. There may be exceptions but I think in most cases a hair transplant isn't going to give a result of thick hair. It can take you from balding to more of a slight diffuse thinning situation which is perfect for a concealer to fill it out. The nice thing is you'll know it's not going to change and you'll always be able to give yourself a full head of hair with a concealer instead of feeling like a concealer is a temporary fix. It literally takes me two minutes to apply the concealer and I'm good to go for the day. I don't have a problem with it not staying on like I've seen people complain about.

Interesting, if I can ask what norwood would you think you would be without any hair transplants?

Theoretically, if someone was a Norwood 7 (I am nowhere near that - btw) do you think they could get a transplant into random places and get a concealer to fill it in?

I've really been thinking about doing this, concealer works wonders for me except at the hairline where my hair is extremely thin but there is a clear line where my hairline is (NW1.5/2 hairline) I'm heavily thinned in a NW6 pattern so what I was thinking was do a hair transplant with higher density in the frontal third, then transplant less hair in the rest of the diffuse areas and just use concealer behind the hairline. I'd be open to more hairstyles since as of now I have to keep my hair flat to hide my hairline when i use concealers, looks boring as hell.

As far as when to use concealers, they are water resistant to some degree I use it all the time at the gym without it sweating off but I also use hairspray so that may help it stay better as well. I wouldn't go out with it in the rain though. I also wash it out every night before bed when I use my topicals and in the morning i use minoxidil foam before i put concealer.

A lot of people do, and in my view it's a good approach. It's probably not too heavily promoted by hair transplant clinics, as it would reveal the limitations of the procedure if you need to augment the work with something else.

I'm guessing based on looking at my thick horseshoe I would probably be a Norwood 6. I would think as a norwood 7 you would need really good donor hair to get enough coverage for a concealer to be really effective. I am blessed with really good donor hair. It's thick and wavy. I have enough donor hair to get further procedures if I want but I'm content using the concealer as a quick part of my morning routine knowing it will never change because the transplanted hair won't ever fall out. My donor hair was the silver lining in the dark cloud of baldness.
