I am a 19 yr old college student. I first started noticing a small patch of my hair thinning out on my right temple area about 5 months ago. I dont have severe loss or anything but i can definitely notice thinning on the right side.

I saw a dermatologist and he diagnosed me with alopecia areata. I am sketchy about this diagnosis because the thinning is in a spot that is consistent with male pattern baldness. He said it wasnt male pattern baldness because the thinning wasnt symmetric.

My question to everyone is if when you first started to notice your hair thinning/ receeding, if it was symmetric or if anyone had similar symptoms like I am experiencing.

Does the derm you went to have experience or specialize in hair loss? Does ANYONE in your family suffer from male pattern baldness?
I've read here a # of times how someone goes to their derm and the DR. misinforms the patient about hairloss. That's why it's important to find one the deals with hair loss on a regular basis.
I know my hairloss didn't start start symectrically. It started in the center of my hairline completely destroying my widow's peak Then it slowly progressed to diffuse thinning all over my crown. There was a discussion here recently talking about how one side is thinning faster than the other. The majority if not all had unsymetrical hairloss.

do a search on "right side left side" or something like that. I think that was the title of the thread.

I am not sure how experienced my derm is with hairloss.

Everyone in my family has very thick hair except my great uncle was completely bald. I never thought baldness was anything I would have to worry about.

I did the search but I couldnt find anything.

Get it checked out by a qualified Derm.

Sorry dude...But the sonner you realize it the sooner you can do something about it before it gets bad. Stay away from the snake oils and go straight to Propecia. See if that works first before adding anything else. But before you do anything, find a Derm that deals with hair loss on a regular basis. :!:
