Due to some severe irritation I am gonna stop using minoxidil for two weeks to let my head heal.
I have been using it for more then two years and never had a problem but now my head itches en I have a
wound on my right temple that keeps getting infected and swollen...

Will this interruption make me loose hair??

I think it's more important for your head to heal, this could impede your progress a lot more than stopping minoxidil. Although, you could try reducing your application to once daily. But it should be all right if you stop for a week or two.

Try using some healing lotion on your head in the interim: for instance, a lotion with aloe vera for dry hands... and really let it soak in. Good luck.

I have had this problem before. For the "wound" get some antibiotic first aid ointment such as Neosporin. Apply to the affected area before bed. I'm not kidding when I say it had completely healed my spot within 2 nights.

thanks for the advice

now after not using minoxidil for two days it is getting much better. But I am not gonna make the same mistake as two weeks ago when I had stopped using it for a week and the wound had almost completely healed. I then started the minoxidil again and the wound got worse again.

according to your regimen, you have been using minoxidil since 2003.
Why do u still use it twice a day if its gona be almost 3 years...i think after 1 year you can use it 1xa day for maintenance

I would love to use it only once a day because it is a big hassle applying it twice.
But where did you get the info about using it only once as maintenance? Could you provide a link or direct me to a study or a thread where this is being discussed?

I also used a lot like maybe 8ml each day (minoxidil 2%). I think I will cut back on that a bit.

yes 6-8 ml (this means 3-4ml each application) for real, I felt that much was necessary to get it on the affected area which for me is the whole male pattern baldness-area.

Also I use the 2% because it is convenient for me to buy and Bryan says that instead of using a higher percentage minoxidil you can also use more of a lower percentage minoxidil.

Two days ago I applied the minoxidil again (the spot had almost totally healed) but the next day the irritation (also on other places of my scalp) was back, damn ...
I can't wait with using the minoxidil too long anymore because I know that will cost me hair. I will pick up the antibiotic ointment and see what happens. I only hope I didn't develop an allergy or something similar to the minoxidil after almost three years on it.

Damn this I think I wont be able to use minoxidil anymore, every time I apply it my scalp gets bumps and itchyness and red and a burning sensation.

I dont understand why, I used it for so long without any problem, could it be a bad batch or something?

This is scary I hope this will not cost me a lot of hair because it is going so well with the propecia I started a year ago.

:x :freaked: :-x

How were your gains from minoxidil before you started on finasteride? When did you start noticing a big improvement in your hair?

I'm asking because maybe finasteride is the workhorse in all this and the minoxidil gains are marginal. I'm wagering that is most likely the case.

If minoxidil is giving you sores, however, you have no choice but to pull back for a while. Sucks, but you're liable to do more damage than good if your scalp is constantly irritated and bleeding.

thx for responding Adrian.
yes the gains are predominatly from the finasteride, because I started the finasteride after using minoxidil for a year and I was back to baseline and shedding a lot then.

I think minoxidil did give me some extra hairs which kept balding at bay for the first seven months or so.

The finasteride made my shedding normal and now after being on it for a year I am definately better then before I started minoxidil. I have written about it in "My Story", the link can be found in my signature.

I am not gonna use the minoxidil anymore, maybe I should try and get some PPG-free minoxidil. Maybe I developped an allergic reaction to the PPG, what are the signs of such a reaction, anyone?
