Just wondering for those of you using Rogaine in combination with propecia or another dht suppressant. Once your hair returns to the thickness and count you desire can you discontinue using one of the products or must you continue to use both?

Good question, i was wondering the same thing.
Onces rogaine does its stuff (if lucky) and you get hair regrowth,
is it possible to only use propecia to prevent from falling off again since thats what propecia does.

gotta use both, however, some claim that you can maintain the gained hair at a lower dose such as using minoxidil once per day instead of two.

once you stop minoxidil, the hair regrow by it will fall out in 6 months or so.

I don't fully understand why the hair from rogaine would fall out. The hair IS growing and you think the hair follicle would keep going as long as propecia is still there doing its thing. I guess its just wishful thinking.

Rogain "tricks" that follicle into growing. Putting rogaine on your head is like telling your follicles to ignore what they have been doing and go into full throttle hair production. All of your follicles will do the best they can, but DHT has damaged many of them beyond repair.

Once you quit rogaine, you will lose those hairs reguardless of propecia because as far as your scalp was concerned, they where never suppose to be there in the first place.

I think most people don't understand that Propecia is a DHT inhibitor. Minoxidil gives a hirsutism effect where applied. Whether this is because dilation of the blood vessels or something else, it's unknown. The hair you grow from minoxidil may be a 'former' hair, or it may be another hirsutism effect. Stop taking minoxidil and Propecia can't keep the hair because it's believe the hair is there due to dilation. However, if the hair is grows because of Propecia, then it'll stay there after you cease to use minoxidil.

Now maybe minoxidil raises some other things through the roof - like IGF-1 or some other hormone responsible for hair growth. It's really unknown.

Would this mean more and more hairs are becoming damaged by DHT and would become dependent on minoxidil as opposed to becoming dependent on finasteride?

Yes, your hair will be damaged by DHT while on a minoxidil-only treatment.

Hair doesn't become dependent on finasteride like it does with minoxidil. Finasteride is a DHT inhibitor. It saves your hair by lowering the conversion of testosterone to DHT. Any DHT inhibitor does this, but not all are as equally strong as finasteride.
