My diffuse thinning started when I was 15 and a freshman in high school. I started getting comments from people that my hair was looking thin. I started looking at it and I noticed that I had diffuse thinning all over the top of my head.

I went to a dermatologist and after looking at my hair he said that I probably had male pattern baldness. At 15 this seemed impossible. My father and grandfather and uncle on my Dad's side all have extremly thick heads of hair. On my mothers side my two Uncle are thinning but one is 30 and barely has lost any hair. The other is about 40 and only has a small bald spot and sme resession. Niether started balding before they were 25. My grandpa on my mother's side is completely bald but he is over 85 years old.

Since it seemed wierd to have MPD at 15, and because I only had diffuse thinning and no recession of my hairline my doctor did a biopsy. 3 weeks later I got the news that the biopsy said I dont have MPD.

I now started looking for all other casues of my hairloss. I had blood drawn multiple times and everything came back normal. I am in shape and have no other major problems. I had no tragic events recently. I had been taking mynocycline for acne, but I stoped soon after becasue I feared this was causing my hairloss.

During this summer my hair got noticably worse. My hairline remained completly normal, but my hair thinned everywhere. You could notice a very thin area at my crown where I parted my hair. This summer I became very depressed becuase I had no idea what was causing my hairloss.

Around when school started my hair stopped getting noticable worse. It has basically remained the same since then. I have been using dermatch since then on my crown and it works very well.

I am now 17 and I am starting to think that even though the biopsy that I had, says I don't have MPD, that I really do. I have not noticed my hair getting worse, but I am afriad that it is very slowly getting worse.

Today I started using Rogain 5%. I plan to start taking multivitmin, and buy some Nizoral Shampoo to use twice a week. I also want to try Tricomin Follicle Spray. I am going to plan another trip to my doctor to see if I can get on propecia. Ill turn 18 in a week.

Yeah, its the minoxidil 5%.

I honestly cant tell if im thinning in the back and sides. Its defenatly not as thin as the top.
I allways told myself I was thinning in the sides when I didnt think I had male pattern baldness. I though I had some form of Telogen Effluvium.
Now I think it's just a wierd case of male pattern baldness because the horseshoe area of the top is much thinner

Dude, sorry, I know this sucks especially since it's happening to you so young. I think that the minoxidil and Nizoral is a good start. Propecia could definitely help, but I'm not sure about the age thing. Do you have to be 18 or 21 before you start that? I'm not sure how hormones and all that are effected by this medication. Definitely go to you derm or a new one to get the straight facts for this.

^def aint 21. possibly 18 sometimes. i really dont know. it wud be quite rude to stop someone with male pattern baldness from starting propecia.

your derm sounds incompetent. you don't need a biopsy to diagnose male pattern baldness. you just need to use a magnifying glass to check for miniturizaton and not inflamation. also they need to look at the pattern, make sure it is not patchy, and look at the sides as well.

definitely get a different derm, or just get propecia from this one and get your advice from this board. i'm still curious if the pattern is actually male pattern baldness and need some pictures to judge, since i've seen some patchy losses that can look similar.

it is amazing how many people don't realize how young hair loss can happen. most assume you have to be 35 or something. i was a nw2 at 15 and a nw3 at 20 and now have diffuse thinning on top of my head. I really think people are getting it much sooner than their parents, and i don't know why. i'd blame the higher UV ray penetration, but so many other things are going wrong with population health that any trend could be pointed at.

Well ive been using rogain for the last 2 weeks, and im going to go get nizoral to see if that helps.
However, is it safe for me to take finasteride this young? Im worried that it wil mess up my hormones and stuff.
I don't think my hair is patchy at all, but i realy can't tell if its thinner on the sides than the top. I'm going to see if I can go get another derm. I'll also see if i can get some pics up.

hey, i had the biopsy too, his concern was that mine was just coming out too easy and fast for male pattern baldness... plus i had below normal testosterone levels, though the biopsy came back normal, it's probably just a standard cover your *** policy

My derm didn't even need a magnifying glass to tell me I had male pattern baldness. He just looked at this chart, maybe the Norwood one, and after feeling my hair and examining my scalp pronounced me to be at the beginning stages of hair loss. so I don't know if the magnifying glass is a requirement.
