corn row braiding & hair loss

I am 39 years old and in April of this year went to an island and had my hair braided in corn rows along with my daughter. The braids were tight but I had no idea the damage it could cause to my hair. I use to have extremely thick hair and when I took my braids out handfulls of hair fell out. It was devasting, it has been 7 months and my hair is still very thin I have tried to find information of the damages of braiding but every thing seems to state that it must be prolonged over time even my doctor didn't think it could be because I did it once. Does anyone have a similar experience or have any information. I suppose my constant worry does not help but I don't know what happened to all my hair and why it's not growing back
