Khai,

Nobody knows exactly what minoxidil does.

QUOTED FOR EMPHASIS. Yeah it's an anomaly. Dr. Lee said nobody knows why minoxidil does what it does.

(cept it doesn't do it for me)

thanx for this humility.

But still there are some hypothesis, i guess no?

I heard minoxidil could increase blood flow or something like that.

here is my stupid theory, that I come up while applying...it is because I am rubbing a damn plastic dropper over my head, stimulating the poors and adding some whack-ado chemical to my head...

like said above..hasnt done anything for me...other than 'I fell good' knowing that I am at least trying and not just vacuuming.

bomb that xandrox 5% azealiac acid without bv and prophely glyco doesnt work for you?

How long u been using it?

Maybe it doesnt work cause you need 2 give it time, or you need the prophelyin glyco or whatever. 2 bad u got the allergic reaction 2 it.

And bomb I give you huge props man. I remember you saying you had an allergic reaction with minoxidil and your scalp had puss, it hurt, and started bleeding. Man if that happened 2 me I would serously flip out and have a heart attack. I am serously not mentally strong enough 2 handle something like that. I would serously feel like getting a peice and pulling the trigger if that happened 2 me lol. I wouldnt but id feel like it. Man your emotionally strong.

Although even docs say they don't know exactly how minoxidil works, they do know the general effects of it. Basically, as you get older and as your hair matures, successive follicles in male pattern baldness areas, because of male pattern baldness and DHT etc, tend with each growth cycle to start the hair shafts (the bulb area) slightly closer to the surface of the skin, and the follicles tend to hold onto the hair for a shorter amount of time. The result is, with continuing cycles, hair that is spending more and more time resting, and less time growing, and the hair that does grow is smaller in diameter.

With minoxidil, from how it was explained to me, it somehow coaxes the follicles to start hairs deeper and hold onto hairs longer. In effect, reversing the SYMPTOMS of male pattern baldness but not the male pattern baldness itself. This is because once the minoxidil is stopped, successive hair follicles will start at the shallow level they would have if you did not start minoxidil, and hold onto the hair for the same time before shedding as they did before minoxidil. In effect, the temporary and successive gains in hair thickness and length immediately reverse to where they would have been if you never used minoxidil.

minoxidil doesn't counteract the cumulative effect of the DHT on your follicle, it just fools the follicle to temporarily produce hair as if it were not affected by the DHT.

I hope this clarifies. Did I get it right, guys?

thanx gardener (btw in the 70s steve austin was called "the 3 billion man" in France, I don't know why).

I found this on skinbiology.com:

Cutaneous blood flow is decreased in pattern baldness and minoxidil increases cutaneous blood flow to the scalp, possibly promoting hair growth by this mechanism. However, other vasodilators do not grow hair.

The stumptailed macaque is a superior animal model for studying pattern baldness (Uno 1987a)  They have balding patterns similar to that in humans. Balding begins shortly after puberty occurs in nearly all macaques including females. Uno et al. demonstrated that minoxidil activated resting follicles in the balding scalp inducing follicular enlargement and preventing progression of balding. When treatment was discontinued, all beneficial effects were reversed, and balding progressed. (Uno 1985a, 1985b)

The figure to the left was developed from Uno's meticulous research on the effect of minoxidil through various phases of the hair cell cycle in rat models. Both sets of figures start at T or teleogen. The minoxidil treated skin produces larger hair follicles. It should be emphasized that effects in humans are not this dramatic.

In a 1996 paper Uno (Uno 1996) reported that that topical minoxidil induced an  increased rate of DNA synthesis in follicular cells in early anagen but not in nonfollicular  cells such as fibrocytes or  epidermal keratinocytes. Minoxidil induced a significant increase in DNA synthesis  in all follicule cells in a dose-specific manner. They suggest that minoxidil has a specific affinity to hair follicular cells and induced  their cell proliferation. Recently, researchers at L'Oreal suggested that minoxidil works by activating PGHS 1 (prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase-1) which helps promote hair growth.

Gardener is on the ball.

It's been suggested that minoxidil grows hair either because of nitric oxide release (most likely notion) or because it activates potassium channels, however, others chemicals which activate potassium channels don't seem to have the effect of growing hair.

*minoxidil releases nitric oxide
*minoxidil is a vasodilator
*minoxidil affects cardiac contractility
*minoxidil activates potassium channels

Basically, we don't really know how it works yet.

No luck yet with the xandrox... it's been about 3 months. I'm going to give it 2 more. I just bought another supply yesterday and instead of using 1ml, i'm going to use 2mls just to make sure I'm getting really good coverage.

I'm also adding Sprio... WHAT? I dunno i'm just trying to figure out what WORKS
