Couple Questions Re: Using Rogaine Liquid

I've received my Rogaine Kirkland liquid order. I was using the foam prior for the past 4 months with minimal results.

Couple of issues/questions re: the liquid, any assistance is much appreciated.
  • Once the liquid (finally) dries, applying my toppik doesn't work nearly as well as the foam. It doesn't 'bind' to the hairs nearly as well, and when i attempt to style with some product, A LOT of the toppik comes off onto my fingers. - Much more than with the foam. Any advice?
  • I'm using it on the back of my head in addition to the front area & hairline. Should I be using 1 ml on both areas? 2 ml total head? This is quite greasy, as I'm sure you all know. Or, 1 ml on entire head?
  • My plan is to wash my hair at night (same plan as previous foam use), then apply the liquid over night. Rinse my hair really well in AM shower (no shampoo), attempt to get most of the night liquid out. Then, re-apply liquid for the day. The residue of liquid from the night prior makes my head EXTRA greasy when the morning application goes on top. When it dries, this is when the toppik also goes on, adding to the issue above. Any suggestions on a better protocol?
Thanks a lot.

The liquid is too oily to use in the day to be honest, I recently went from foam (3 years) to the liquid (5 weeks) and I've noticed that the liquid seems to be really working on my hair loss whereas I saw no differences using the foam.

Saying that, I apply liquid at night then shower in the mornings ready. Some days, if I know I have a free morning (half days at work or weekends), I do 2 applications of the liquid but I will never leave the house without showering it out.

In your case, I would say you could use the liquid at night, and foam in the day, I found that the rogaine brand of minoxidil had a really good styling effect so its nice to use in the day. I will probably start doing this as well.

Thanks man. So you apply to liquid at night on top of the foam that's still in your hair from the AM? With toppik in my hair, I'd imagine this would be an unholy mess....

I understand the concern. How much toppik do you use, just a light sprinkle or a real heavy coat? I would recommend using only a light sprinkle so that it still gives a thickening effect but not that much as to look like a heavy coat.

The best way to do this would be to part your hair and wet it slightly, then spray the minoxidil liquid directly at the scalp, I find that since its a liquid and has some density, it gets to the scalp much better and would definitely get past a layer of toppik, because the toppik is supposed to be on hair and not scalp, if you parted the hairs to get to the scalp, in theory, it should be completely fine.

Of course, it would call for showering in the morning since the toppik would be out of place, ran down your head maybe? etc.

i usually use a decent amount of toppik as i can get a relatively full coat of fake hair if i do, ha. why do you suggest slightly wetting hair in eve? is it to part the hair easier? the second i wet it, it will create a big mess again w the toppik. maybe i should just place the liquid dropper through my dry hair onto the scalp?? ok cool, i just wanted to confirm rogaine will still do it's 'job' if applied to my basically unclean hair, overnight.

i DEFINITELY will need to leave this eve process out if I have a chick over for the night, that's for SURE!

Imo, I just really feel that too much toppik makes it look too fake.

I remember a time when I first started having hair loss, my hair loss was diffuse thinning and extremely agressive, I saw my pattern emerge in the space of 6-12 months, I went from having great hair to having a severely balded scalp (20-30% density), I attribute this to a poor lifestyle at the time accelerating my loss, and also my use of concealer. I used my concealer everyday and it was great, the Nanogen brand was perfect for my and it hid my hair loss so well, so well that some days I would forget myself.

Then one day, a friend commented on my hair because it looked like I had dyed it, then a few weeks later I was out on a night out and a picture was taken but the flash really highlighted my balding and use of concealer. From that day I pretty much stopped using concealer (as much) and luckily I have been moderately sucessful with finasteride, getting some of my density back and I slowly came off using concealer. I still have really thin hair but I don't mind it as much as its definitely not as bad as before.

The moral of this is really that the concealer can give you an illusion but its not the cure, if anyone actually exposed your toppik you would be quite embarrassed? Using less is better, in my own experience I remember distinctly that using so much makes hair look really fake. When I walk around in public I can easily spot out people with concealer in the hair purely because they've used too much and over compensated on it. I really feel that a light dusting followed by hairspray is the best combination, since it still hides thinning but not to the point where its unrealistic.

Anyway, back to the orginial topic, yes wetting will make hair easier to part and you are right, it will make a mess pretty much put thats liquid for you, as long as you wash your hair in the morning thats fine, you could definitely try to do it to dry hair as well i'm sure that would work, its all about preference really. And yes, obviously if you have someone over or are out, you just skip the process for that day.

Usually for minoxidil they packaging recommends 1 mL per application, but they also state that it's intended for use on the crown area, so it's a good idea to use more than that if you're using it on the whole scalp. I use around 2 mL to cover the whole NW6 area.

Thx zoro. Yeah def safe to say the liquid rogaine and toppik do NOT mesh well. When I 'pat the toppik down' on my head post application, about a 1/8 of it comes off! This is at least an hour after rogaine application. With the foam, after 30 minutes or so I could apply toppik and it would bind well....
