Most people with acid reflux do not over produce acid (some do). They underproduce it, which worsens their digestion, and keeps food in the stomach longer, increasing the likelyhood for some acid to come up since the stomach is so full.

Your body needs chloride ions to make HCl. Salt is one source of chloride ions. So is potassium chloride. The low sodium revolution may be to blame for acid under production.

If you have smelly flatulence, it may be because you don't have enough HCl in your stomach to break down the protein. Or you may just need better gut bacteria.

Acid production declines with age, but acid reflux tends to be more common as you get older. Acid reflux has also become more common over the years, which may be from the low sodium diets.

A fast way to find out if you have too little acid is to take a HCl Betaine pill (OTC) with a meal. If it makes you burn more, then you probably are already making enough.

This applies to ulcers too. An ulcer forms because you don't make enough acid. Bacteria then move in and munch on the stomach protective lining. Once a hole is formed, any acid that is made will burn the stomach. Then it is impossible to make acid to kill the bacteria without hurting the stomach too. At that point, you need antibiotics to kill the bacteria, and must protect the ulcer until the lining recovers after the bacteria are gone.

Cranberries can help kill those bacteria, but probably not as well as antibiotics, or maintaining acid levels in the first place. To have high acid levels, you need chloride ions in your diet, and probably should eat oranges too.

If you don't want acid reflux then stop eating the glue foods.

Ever mixed up (wheat) flour and water in a dish before? You get glue. Strong glue. Same with the other foods used to make industrial adhesives (unfermented cow milk protein, corn, and unfermented soy protein)

Your stomach creates a whole heap of acid in a desperate attempt to break the glue down. Hello acid reflux.

My old man passes his reflux off as old age as he scoffs down half a dozen pieces of bread, some crackers, biscuits and milk everyday. The doctors are more than happy to keep selling him reflux tablets. :shakehead:
